Not sure if this has been done before, but in your opinion what is the best shot in golf? Be it the long, soaring drive, the delicate flop over a bunker, or sinking that 30 foot putt. Let me know what you think.
Im a fan of belting the driver and leaving a short iron to the green but the most exhilerating is when you have a tight green surrounded by bunkers with 70-80 yards to go and getting the ball to stop by the pin and not make a horlicks of it and dumping it into the bunker.
A well spanked drive does tend to bring out the "oh my gosh, that's travelling rather well" exclamations (ok, I tend to use fewer words on the course) but the 80yard pitching wedge over trees is the one. I know one shouldn't have to, but look at my tag.....
At the moment it's the 163 yard , 21 degree hybrid I hit on the 13 fairway on Saturday.
Cleared the drainage ditch set back at 60 yards from the green , skipped on the fringe and came to rest ten inches from the hole giving me a tap in for gross birdie
The other half (preparing a medicine shot to my right at the time) thought I'd had a heart attack when I spluttered and dropped to my knees
I might play the rest of my life and never jam one like that again.
Would love to say I meant it but (apart from in the broadest sense) I didn't.
Golf - gotta love it sometimes.
Apart from that I would say the well struck 4 or 5 iron that plops neatly on the middle of the green. It's a Zen moment isn't it?
Never had one and probably never will be but me it has to be this;
You tee up on a short par4, select driver, hit an absolute snorter that looks destined for the gree and then wow, shock, its only gone in the hole for an albatross!
If I ever did this the clubhouse would be suffering a shortage of my beverage of choice that day.
Anything that required imagination and execution, not just flushing a straight shot, but having to manufacture something special, such that when you pull it off, you think no one else could have seen it like that, or carried it off, not even tiger.
I think it would have to be the 4iron I hit last year for my 2nd shot on our 17th, in the club championship. I had just taken a triple on the 16th to let another guy back into the race. It was a low punch shot with the 4iron into about 7 feet, which I holed and we 2 shots infront again.
I also had a hole in 1 that same round. But the 4 iron made me smile.
For me i love seeing a smooth put going in from any distance, but the longer, the better. The feeling when hitting a great drive is brilliant but as the old saying goes "drives for show.....etc etc". Standing on the first tee alls that is in my mind is "grip it and rip it".
Love the feeling of a long straight drive off the first tee when the eyes of all the waiting groups are on you and the rest of your group are heckling about not choking under the pressure.
Shots from the tee have the wow factor, whatever hole you are playing, and can really set you up for how you play the rest of the hole.
Equally, playing 1st in a society day with all other 16-20 people watching the tee shot on the first - get a good one away and you feel great, get a bad one and for the rest of the hole.
I don't anything beats seeing a snaker of a 30 yard double breaking putt leave the face with the perfect weight and taking exactly the line you chose and dropping at the end of its journey.
