Played the first round of a 4-man team event yesterday. Stableford scoring, best 2 scores on each hole count. Off 3/4 handicaps.

We played pretty well, one of our guys eagled the par 5 18th, came in with 86 points.

There was an 84, 82, 81 and a few 70's.

Winner was on 93.

Some were wondering if that score is normal for these type of events? In effect, it's 2 players coming in with 47 & 46 points...

Not shouting banditry, the guys had respectable handicaps (12-16 before the 3/4 calculation), just wondered if there's been any scores so high in these type of events before?

I play in one of these every year, albeit full handicap. Normally around 15 teams - 90 points would probably see you around 3rd with 95 winning it. 93 off 3/4 handicaps is high but not unrealistic

If you think about it, a score of 90 is only 5 points per hole.

Which equates to 1 player from 4 scoring a three-pointer and 1 player from 4 scoring a 2 pointer - and the other two can bomb to their hearts content ...

l guess that's not that difficult to achieve (unless you have me in the team ...)

Played in several of these at Open events in the last 12 months.

I've seen odd scores in the 90's but mid 80's can often get you in the mix.

We've won with 86 and just missed out with 77 when 80 won.

Been in the top 3 with scores of 85 to 90 but you can name the winning team in advance 75% of the time - they always beat someone by 1 pt.

They are so good at the team format.

Being miserable gits we worked out we simply were leaving almost nothing out there on our good days and still couldn't win so we don't bother playing in them any more !

The final straw was when our team scorer recorded a par 3 wrong - he had just missed a 1ft birdie putt himself and failed to record his par. We came 3rd on count back as a bogey got included, losing 2nd to the perennial winners who for once just missed out.

Played in a Finch tour event last year at Fairhaven and we came third with 91. The winners (from memory) came in with 99 points and had a +handicapper in their team.

You can't ignore the nature of the course in considering scores for these events.

Given a shorter course, true greens and a group of 20 handicap seniors and you might well see even higher scores!

It's not a format that's often played over a tough, long course; but when it is the winning score can be a lot lower:clap:

very true, we have a 4 man team thing but that's best two gross scores not Stableford and i can't remember this years winning score.

as for stableford scores, sometimes its won with 36 points or lower for individuals

Oh yes indeed. We have one team who always have a player on 18 H/c just for his H/C. All the others just go at the flag. They are usually there or there abouts in scrambles. We don't play the 4 man stableford though. I'll add it to our winter comps. Cheers.
