Having now played golf for over a year I was becoming increasingly frustrated at not being able to break 100 consistently..... a few rounds of 99 were often followed up by a 108 or something similar.

So after a couple more lessons and some hard work down the range I managed to shoot 95 yesterday and another 95 today..... i'm really hoping that i've turned the corner and i'll now be under 100 alot more often. My friend signed the card and so I handed it in, any ideas if my handicap will get cut?

My handicap is 28 and the par for the course is 69.

Mickey the SUMO driver was on top form on the front 9 but i started to sky it about 80yds on the back 9 which then put pressure on my long irons... over the moon with the score though. how's your game coming on?

Depends on the course but i imagine it will be around 24-26ish.

Stick n another 95 and this will be about right i should imagine

Keep at it, we all have nightmares at times so just keep going. Lessons are a great idea, nothing can improve you quicker than working with a professional. I am a single figure handicap player and I will still try and get a lesson every month - six weeks. Its amazing what can creep in!

Also put in a wee bit extra on your short game as that will save you loads of shots.

Around the greens will be the area that you can turn that 7 into a five with an up and down which really helps both score wise and mentally.

Keep up the good progress and remember sometimes a step back can lead to greater things.

Minty the winter is playing havoc with my game. I tee off early on a Sunday morning and frozen greens and frost have played there part. Best round this year 110! One day my irons are hot but the putting is not, next round the total oppersite.

I seem to send my drives very low off the tee, or hook them right. My main problem is not committing to the shot. i think if your skying them then maybe your teeing up too high or coming down onto the ball (like an iron shot) instead of sweeping the driver (like i know what i'm taking about!)

Playing tomorrow in an office four ball

I'd say it took me well over a year to break 100. Short game/putting etc. is very hard to get good/reliable in a relatively short space of time. With lessons and general improvements in all the areas of your game, it'll get better quite quickly, I'd expect. I'm sure 95's or better will become the norm soon.

Greta stuff Minty. Keep it up.

Tread carefully though, because just after you think you've cracked it, the game more often then not jumps up and bites you on the ass to remind you that you have in fact..... NOT!

And you never will.

Minty, you cant get your handicap cut at this time of the year nor can it go up

Not heard of this before divot, I've seen lots of peoples handicaps change over the winter. The common complaint from most golfers is that there handicap goes up through the winter. My golf club definitely alters handicaps through the winter.

This h'cap question has been doing the rounds over the winter. There is no question at my club. There is a winter SSS (off "blue" mats) and CSS as normal. Mostly, folks have not moved but low rounds have led to cuts. There is definately evidence to suggest that some clubs make their own rules for the winter. We play on full greens and the SSS is 2 less, making it hard to get get cut. Courses using temp greens are right (in my opinion, only) to not adjust. if the temps are short of the mains and sometimes greens are on/off, it makes sense to not fiddle with the h'caps, I guess.
Regardless, if a 20 h'cap is knocking it round to 10 every week, then the sec' could decide to adjust it anyway.

Fair enough they may cut your handicap for winter play but you must start the season with your national handicap that you finished with last season.

No thats not correct.

All our comps are non counting which means that your handicap will not go up. It has to be non-qualifying before you can't be cut. Our comps are non qualifying if any winter greens are used. The measured sss is 2 less than the medal tees. Anybody who beats this on a day where no winter greens are used will be cut. Their handicap does not go back to what it was at the end of last season.

Stuartd, i have just been on the sgu website and i think you may be correct with what you are saying, i have been a member at the same club for twenty years and always went back to the handicap you finished with at the end of the season, our club does not play any comps of the medals in the winter so it has never affected our handicaps, i will be on the phone on monday to check this out.

I am sure our old club had a rule where you could't go up if it was prefered lies or winter greens BUT they COULD cut you !!!!!!!!!!

Eh, I got out of there quick sharp.

You bloody well did!!!!  :D :D

I am sure the Shotts handicap committee will soon see some good scores from you and start weilding the axe
