There are no doubt other posts on this, however, I am considering a new GPS and would appreciate thoughts on what's out there, will probably not go Skycaddie as object to annual subscription. Thanks guys.

Im after the Garmin S1 GPS watch - I use golfshot on the iphone at the moment for practice rounds as your not allowed it in comps.

I have sonnocaddie on the i phone, its good but 1) dont like phone on the course & 2) worried about damage to the i phone as they are not the most robust things out there.

it depends what your after from your GPS, is it just front/middle/back distances to the green, or are you after more indepth distances like hazzards, carries etc.

Can't beat Garmin S1 if all you require is distance to front, centre and back of green. Accurate and convenient and also measures shots etc. Most courses already loaded and no subscription.

I's look at the Garmin G5. That is the one I'm considering if I change from my SC5

Just looked at a Garmin myself, I presently have a caddylite, very basic but does a job, however screen starting to go and having problems uploading new courses.

Would like something reasonably detailed as off to St Andrews in May for 4 rounds + playing in a few comps, hence do not want to pay extra for course downloads.

I've tried both GPS and laser. Much prefer the laser as it is much more accurate and also no subscription. The battery in mine lasts about a year so running costs are minimal. I've got the Nikon and can highly recommend it if you consider a laser.

I've recently bought the golfbuddy world platinum which is a great piece of equipment and doesnt have a subscription either, not the cheapest but has all the features you need

Agree. Good bit more flexibility with the laser for targeting overhanging trees, G.U.R, the group in front etc

I have the Skycaddie SGX and i think it is simply amazing!! gives distances to front, middle and back of the greens and when paired up with a pin sheet it gives exact distances to the pin! Also has its layup feature so you know the distances to water hazards and bunkers etc :D

The only real issue I see with a laser is that it doesn't pick up hidden hazards, like small streams that are in front of greens or if you have a blind tee shot or approach.
