Hi, I'm looking at buying a golf GPS Watch that I can wear all the time, suitable for golf (accurate yardages to greens and hazards, measure shot distances etc) and use for running (Odometer). The ESN WR72 Alpha has caught my eye, have any of you chaps/chapesses used this watch? It is very new and I can't find any user reviews.

Any good alternatives?
Thanks
Paul:cheers:

hi, i have a Garmin S1 and for the price and what i need it for (yardages to the green, front, middle, back) and shot measurer, its perfect! i think not far off £100 now. there are more expensive and possibly better ones, but for basic needs, this is pretty great for me!!

Skycaddie GPS watch-close thread

never heard of the Alpha but a google search shows some retro looking bulky watch at £225:eek:

Agree with this. I bought one for £99. Superb bit of kit for the price.

Garmin S1 doesn't do distances to hazards though which the OP asked for.

This is true, I'm looking for that one stop shop gps watch. Sky caddie and S1 don't include hazards (as I understand), and they are both slightly more bulky than ESN believe it or not. The retro look means that it doesn't have the look of a golf watch.

Really appreciate the comments chaps.

mmm - not affiliated with them are you?

Suspicious minds think alike!

Giving him the benefit of the doubt... the Garmin S3 is cool piece of kit and you can save parts of the course (like hazards) to it so that you can check distances. It's a feature I've yet to use though, generally I go by a course planner and the watch and it works a treat.

Yep, like the S3, the only issue being that I'm not sure I'd wear it in the boozer... the lads might take the p.. mick.

I agree it's not the slimmest or fancy looking, but I don't wear a watch so the S3 lives in my golf bag, is down to ~50% after every round so charge it up and then back in the bag. I forgot once and it did me for the round so good that way. I'm not sure what you play off but at my level front-mid-back is all the info I need, if I get the ball anywhere in that range I'm happy! The Skycaddie watch is pretty much the same deal but read some bad reviews on Golfwrx (though it looks like CMAC is having no problems with his). If youre looking for a budget option the S1 is it, I'm not sure what the S5 offers others than different looks so for me its not worth the price.

Happy golfing and welcome along Paul, forgive our suspicions but on occasion we get a touch of the viral around here ;)

Mr Mimms bought the latest bushnell watch {? neo x) and is very pleased with it.
Looks like a ordinary , if large, digital watch.
Does distances to hazards, not sure about odometer

Thanks chaps, and cheers Curls, suspicions excused! I appreciate that some people/organisations could use this as a marketing tool!

I think I'm just picky, keen to have something that looks ok on the wrist, plus the features. Will check the Bushnell again.

I'm off 6, so technically front, middle and back is fine, but my golf course does have a few creeks and cheeky trap positions, so hazard info would definitely add value.

Agreed, S1 looks the best budget watch. I've also heard about the Golf Buddy wt4 http://www.golfalot.com/equipment-news/golfbuddy-wt4-2711.aspx. All the features and slim. And no, I'm not working for golf buddy neither ;)

Ive got a Garmin S3. I certainly wouldn't wear it as a fashion watch down the pub but it does everything I want for golf - front middle back and the hazards you want to put in.
Id be really interested if someone bought out a good multipurpose HRM/GPS watch which had reliable golf maps Garmin/bushnell.
I see the latest watch lets you receive call and texts from your iphone - can someone tell me why? who is that important they need to break off from a round of golf to ring the office ???? or more importantly why would you want to? Occasionally its nice not to be contactable and also shows respect for your playing partners too!

Golf Buddy wt4 is the updated version of the wt3 that I have. I really like the functionality of the wt3, although it is not very intuitive- you do have to read the instructions!
Its only downside is lookswise, it reminds me of an offender ankle tag, so not something to wear off the golf course!
The new wt4 looks much more stylish- i wish I'd waited for that, but I have such tiny girly wrists that all GPS watches look chunky on me

I have the garmin s3 and thoroughly recommend it. Efficient and unobtrusive.
Most of the time I use f/m/b but occasionally use the green view which is pretty cool if I'm using a wedge. Sometimes I think I could've saved 100 quid and got the s1, but when it gives me doglegs and the like I remember how happy with it I am.
And no subscription fee either.

Thanks again for comments.

I think I'm going to go for either the S3/S4 or the Golf Buddy WT4. My club shop are going to price match on these devices.
If I go for the WT4 I'll be sure to let you lot know how it is.
