Surely the best golf commentator has to be...............Peter Allis?

I was watching the Masters preview last night and not only does he occasionally come out with some hillarious comments every now and again, but his knowledge of the game is immense and also a very level headed guy taboot!

His favourite quote of mine was at the 2011 Open when Darren Clarke was just coming down the home stretch and there were some very black clouds overhead, Mr Allis states "oooo those dark clouds look ominous, lets hope they stay that way and deposit all over the French"!!!!! Ken Brown was in stitches!!!

I know he's a bit marmite but I do like Nick Faldo too, although he has said a few stupid things recently.

I agree that Allis is not as good as he used to be, which is understandable. I remember him saying words to the effect of "here is a player new to me and maybe to many of you at home, Jason Dufner" when Dufner had just lost in a playoff for the PGA Championship. However, he has given us all a great amount of pleasure over the years. My favourite was a player crossing himself before playing a bunker shot and leaving it in the sand. Allis: "You can't trust anyone these days." The trouble with the BBC is that they never replaced those great golfing commentators with anyone remotely qualified, choosing radio DJ's and footballers.
My favourite nowadays has to be David Feherty. Eg. This is an extremely fast putt to say the least. what does he have to do to get it to the hole David? Feherty: "Whisper in it's ear".

I agree Feherty, even with his ridiculous accent is absolutely awesome. I like Wayne Riley too. Never understood why Sky reserve him for the Euro tour stuff.

Peter Alliss is still the master. Went to a charity golf day two years ago and he was the guest speaker. He looked totally bored and quite old, but as soon as he stood up to speak he came alive, turned on the old charm, and was naturally very funny. He never tries too hard, unlike a lot of the American commentators.

One of the great commentators, up there with Dan Maskell, Bill McLaren, Peter O'Sullivan, Kenneth Wolstenholme, Richie Benaud and Brian Johnstone.

I like
Faldo
Allis
Hay r.i.p
Wayne Grady
Montgomerie

dont like Maureen Madill

Mark Roe?

........ :smirk:

:D

I'd even take Monty over Mark Roe. Just an awful bloke.

I've warmed to Butch Harmon over the last couple of years too. Good insight into his players' games, enthusiastic to the end and as long as I can't see him doing that creepy "I'm going to stare at you down the camera" thing, it's all good!

I like Peter Allis, Ken Brown and Wayne Grady. All excellent.

I prefer not to listen to Sam Torrance and Nick Faldo. The first is a sycophant and the latter would get me an infraction. I don't warm to Andrew Cotter either.

Maureen is okay. Infinitely preferable to Dan Walker.

I quite like Mark Roe. Pretty insightful and I knew him personally when I was still a Northern Oik.

Golf is an interesting sport to commentate on as you don't have a "play-by-play" and "analyst" defined role for two people. Any golf commentator has to be able to do both. Peter Alliss may have been good once but now he is an embarrassment for the BBC and any journalist. Faldo says what he thinks and doesn't care who he upsets which is the right attitude to have to the job. Feherty is a clown and not respected in the States by the real writers. I would go Alex Hay from this side of the Atlantic and Jim Nantz from the US side.

If only he could stop saying "Absolutely" at the start of every sentence!!

Must admit, I'm another one in the Feherty camp, very funny man.

Having seen the Kirsty Gallagher thread yesterday, I think Sarah Stirk is actually better and more knowledgable, also WHAT A BODY! Rrrrrrrrr!!!!!

Peter Alliss has to be number one for me!

On the flip side Monty is one of the most repetitive and boring commentators to grace our screens!

Alex Hay died two years ago.
