Hi

I am looking to buy a new set of irons. i play off around 18 so am looking for some maximum forgiving irons. I was thinking of the new Ping Rapture V2 irons. Has anyone got any views as to whether they are any good or some good alternatives.

any advice much appreciatted

I currently use an older version of the Wilson Fat Shafts and I found them a great game improvement iron, straight, long and very forgiving.

I'm looking to move away from these now as they have served their purpose, there are newer versions out now and you can pick them up quite cheap too.

Depends on your budget I suppose....

The X20 are a re very good club. I have a set and they give maximum forgiveness. They are starting to come down too as the X22 are due out very soon. The R7's are also a decent club I've had until recently and maybe a tad more of a better strikers club than the X20. The problem is they are a discontinued line now superceded by the Burner range so finding a set may be tricky if you want to try them before you buy

What is your budget? I play off 18 and am selling my X20's, see the for sale section. Callaway X20's are a good improvement iron with workability, so you will still be able to shape shots when/if you start too.

There is no such thing as "best game improvement irons" there is only what feels right for you be it £700 or £150, as long as they feel great price doesnt come into it. Just one thing though, if you are off 18 you might be best not using game improvement irons as 1) Don't get good feedback on bad shots, they just feel all the same 2) the are limited to the type of shot you can play 3) once you are down to a decent level of 10-12 you will need to cough up for something not so forgiving.

Its up to you though but try as many as you can and if the MX19s are best get them or if the Rap V2's are best get them, one mistake I have been done is buy for the brand or posing abilities, it will only affect your game if they are not right.

I looked at these the other day but at £78 an iron, they dont come cheap. Super looking and I expect would be excellent to hit too. Anyone used these?

Might be erong but I think you might find that the MX 19s will have too much offset at your level. Oh and they're cast.

The MX 25s are heavily reduced at the moment, are forged and are aimed as game improv irons and not as full on forgivness cavity backs.

All my opinion though.

BTW welcome to the nut house!!

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention.

I like Ping clubs, especially the metal woods, BUT I've tried many of the "game improvement" offerings from them over the years and sadly, can't stand any of them.

If you are off 18, try the i10s (I think that's what they were) or even the S57s. If the shape and offset of the Raptures is anything like the G10s, I'm not so sure you'll need all that extra help!!!

Just my opinion.....

I see game improvement irons as Callaway BB, MX19s ot G10s not the X20s as I to me they are just cav backs. For game improvement dont they have to have stupidly wide soles?

But they are a very forgivable iron and are designed to help get the ball airbourne, are off set to help with flight. Its just that they are also shapable too...does that make sense?

Obv not as easy as BB but I dont really class these as improvers irons, more beginners irons.

I've had a gander.....

Is it me, or is there something "twilight zone" about what I discovered here.......

TOMMY ARMOUR 845s Silver Scot (original) 1988 677 I HAVE
ORLIMAR SS Scoring Iron 2000 676 (NEVER HEARD!!)
MACGREGOR M565 #6 2005 670 I USE
NIKE Sling Shot OSS #6 2006 669 I'VE TRIED AND LIKE

Can it be shear coincidence that the two sets I have, and another that I have been recommending (Nike) are all placed within the same "score" rating out of THOUSANDS of irons!!

I need to get some therapy....

Dave, at least you know your choice of irons is consistent! You certainly know what you like.

I've been running around the building trying to rid myself of the excess energy created in the body after making such an astonishing discovery.

I have a plan. To see if there really is any difference between a set above or below mine, I think I'll order a set of Callaway X-16 from Golfbidder and play with them for a while

Here's the score....

CALLAWAY Great Big Bertha Tungsten inj. 1997 1038
CALLAWAY Steelhead X-16 2003 1037

Over 1,000!!! I'd get the fusion wide sole if I could afford it for a crazy experiment.....

X-16 3-PW for £222 in stiff graphite......I'm tempted!!!!
