Hi guys
just wondered what you all thought the best game improvement irons are....
i am looking at Callaway Big Berthas, Mizuno MX19, Cobra FP...going to test these 3 out on weekend and buy a set...but was wondering if you think i should test any others?
thanks

Always worth looking at some of the cheaper brands. Benross irons always get excellent reviews. I'm not sure where you can try them though?

I use and love my Taylormade Burner XD's - bit pricey but simpley fantastic to play with for game improvement Irons. I had a set of Mx 19's they where a great Iron, I loved the feel of them but I just could not get used to the looks - MX19's will also help you get a few ££ more when trading them in again as Mizuno are well sought after Irons.

Get down to AG and bash them all - you may find you dont like some but love somthing else.

X20 R7's (these are being superceded by the Burners so you may get good deals on these), G10's are all top end improver/forgiving clubs but I agree with the comments about Benross. Also try MD golf

The Big Bertha 2006's are very good and look a hell of a lot better than the 08 model, but as mentioned above the Cobra FP's are excellent. The MX19s are great but are a little too chunky for me so probs cash them in for xmas and get something prettier to look down on.

I always think the word game improvement irons are a missnomer, as they don't really improve the way you hit the ball, but only the results of a bad strike, so hiding faults... Hardly a good way of improving your game technique.

Shouldn't they be re-termed as fault hideing irons.

There really are loads of irons on the market aimed at players who want to improve their results without really improving their technique. Irons with loads of ugly offset or irons with so much metal going around the edge of a clubhead, you'd think the sweetspot was the size of a tennis raquet.

If you don't mind parting with a few quid, try the very ugly G10 Irons, loads of offset, loads of perimiter weighting, loads of loft off the face & cover up a multitude of sins & I hate them. But perfect for anyone wanting something easy to hit. But you really don't need to pay Ping money to get that sort of technology.

Actually if anyone wants a nice feeling set of irons, they could do far worse than looking at my Nike CPR irons I've got for sale. They actually look very nice, feel nice & best of all are as forgiving as a modern memory foam matteress.

Do 'game improvement' irons improve your game or just disguise poor shots? If they allow you to hit the ball with a naff swing would it not be better spending your sheckles on some lessons before committing to new irons?

I think there is no substitute for improving your technique than, mainly practice and if needed a point in the right direction from someone in the know. If you want to start playing better you shouldn't hide your poor technique behind expensive clubs but put in the time and effort to improve your game.

Agree with you Suths - however, don't forget that some people either start playing at an advanced age or do not have the ability to improve past where they are now. G10's or X20's etc etc are a Godsend for these people. They make the game more enjoyable to play.

And as has also been said you don't have to pay big money for the same level of forgiveness as doshed out but Callaway,Ping and Taylor-Made.

I've tried a good few (wouldn't buy many!) and in terms of sheer ability to get the ball up in the air and moving something near straight I'd opt for Callaway Big Bertha every time.
As odd as it may sound.....i.m.o. even the very "easy to use" Mizuno irons haven't lowered themselves to the all-out maximum help offered by the BBs. Just look at the latest wide sole BB irons.....so hideous and so blatantly not a good players iron.....or am I being ability-ist??

thanks for the advice...went to the pro shop last night and tried out the cobra FP and the MX19....didnt like the cobras at all but hit the MX19 really nicley and felt a lot better to me...he had offered them to me for £215 (new 3-SW). cant really decide if i should go for them or not or whether i should go elsewhere and test out some others (eg BB, X20, G10). but i think this is a good deal and if i go for other either i will have to spend a lot more or i wont get a new set....
what do u guys reckon.....test some others or take the plunge with the MX19s?

If you like the Mx19 and have had the oppotunity to hit them then go for them, ask the pro if he will fit them for you in the price or at least do the loft and lie.

that looks a decent price, AG are £259, and you should get at least a minimal fit, though as they seem to be end stock you may not have the options on the shaft.

If you like those Mizuno Mx-19 irons, I'd actually be tempted to say plump for those. Mizuno are a well recognised & respected brand amoungst club players for obvious reasons. As you don't need to spend big bucks & even then you are getting IMO a top notch brand for a quite reasonable price.

Not tried the MX19 irons myself so can't properly judge, but an iron, that both helps you're game, but with sufficient feedback to let you know when things are not what they should be with your swing are probably the best compromise & I'm guessing that the MX-19 irons will fall into this later heading.

I'dnormally say to anyone try as many different clubs as you can, but on this occasion I'll say.. yep take the plunge, as you put it.

The MX19s are being discontinued by Mizuno, so the original price of £299 will be coming down.

At the time they were the only cast set of clubs they offered, the rest are forged. I have the original loft and lie specs at work if you want them (pm me). Personally I think they look better than the new MX100s, and the long irons are relatively easy to hit. I believe that they've been quite a popular set of irons.

Godd luck whatever you choose.
