I've stolen this idea from the Random Irritations thread.......

You have to pick your best ever football team of all time players. Any formation you like. Go for it.

(I'll add mine once I've picked it)

I'm 30. So will go only players I've seen (mostly on the tele!)

Casillas

Cafu
Rio
Puyol
Maldini (can I have Maldini at centre half as well as left back?!)

Alonso
Gerrard
Zidane

Ronaldo (Cristiano)
Messi
Henry

Special mentions for Schmeichel, Cech, Terry, Lampard, Ashley Cole, Cannavaro, Makelele, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Bergkamp. And countless others I've missed!

Could probably have picked 3 or 4 different teams with the amount of players I had in mind. Toure picked purely based on his prime where he was literally unplayable for the best part of a few seasons.

I will go with a team and a squad picked exclusively from the two World Cups that are most prominent in my mind....1974 and 1978.

Maier
Passarella
Beckenbauer
Krol
Vogts
Platini
Cruyff
Neeskins
Zico
Mueller
Kempes

The rest of my 23 man squad would be... Zoff, Breitner, Gentile,Tresor, Tardelli, Bonhof, Gemmil, Netzer, Rivelinho, Rep, Dalglish, Jairzinho

1967 World Champion crushers.;)

It’s interesting all the myths that have been built up about that game, in a age where no substitutes were allowed England had 3 bad injurys during the game, Jack Charlton broke his toe after 15 mins and alough he scored he was just walking through the game, Ray Wilson was virtually a passenger after getting a knock and Greaves was also at half pace after getting a knock. It was a close game and Hurst hit the post near the end.

Baxter was far from fit also and Scotland had better players on the pitch that day but as he juggled the ball ( something I could have done?) he was hailed as some kind of messiah ?

But Scotland did beat the world champions something they lived on for years, it’s not so often mentioned they didn’t qualify out of the group ??

Not sure how balanced the midfield is but hey ho. Apologies to the many missed off. I can only go off who I have seen and read about. That limits all of our lists depending on our ages.
