Best courses in Surrey for a round

My father in law will be over from Australia for the next couple of weeks. He will be in London until early next week before we head up to Muirfield for the Open and I'm hoping to take him for a round this Sunday morning. I'd appreciate any suggestions of the 'better' courses to play in Surrey. I live in central London and have played a few of the 'average' courses in Surrey so an option is to just take him to my home course but I would be happy to pay up to £150 a head to show him one of the better courses as a one off (i.e. not willing to pay for Sunningdale/Wentworth but assume that sort of price range would get us on most other courses). The one catch is that Sunday is probably the only day we can play so I will have to bear in mind that it will probably be difficult to get on to some of my options at short notice.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

Burhill is quite nice, although you'll probably be on the New course. If you're not restricted to Sunday then St Georges Hill is supposed to be rather pleasant.

The Berkshire is £130 but you can only play from 14:30 at weekends, I know it's not is Surrey but it's near the border :D

Presumably, it's for the 'Surrey Sandbelt/Heathland' feel and a touch of 'old school class/charm' that you are after.

Berkshire is the one that leaps out to me too. Single round there would disappoint slightly as the experience of both courses and lunch is unworldly!

Camberley Heath, also not in Surrey, is another in the Heathland style. Considerably cheaper, but marginal difference in quality imo.

I wouldn't recommend Walton Heath. While I love the place, it's a one-off.

New Zealand might be worth trying to get on. Surrey Heathland and oodles of charm. Not sure whether you can get on at weekends - or ever in fact.

Worplesdon (or West Hill) may be an alternatives too.

Absolutely Best Surrey Heathland course that's not a silly price imo. is Hankley Common. Again, not sure about weekend availability though. Nothing on their Visitors section that says yay or nay, so worth checking. The majestic peace of the place is only interrupted by the occasional Chinook or equivalent!

Hindhead is recommendable too. Again unique - in a great way!

So my recommendation (in order) would be:

Hankley
New Zealand
Berkshire
Camberley
Worplesdon
West Hill
Hindhead

PS: The Addington might also be worth considering, though it's a silly course in Summer imo. because there's no fairway watering. Having to hit a Drive into the right rough to avoid it running into the left trees is not proper golf imo! Great course if the fairways aren't baked though. Most dramatic course architecture not involving a bulldozer in England imo.

How about Walton Heath?

It's where the US Open qualification takes place so really well known. I've never played it but did walk around it during the qualification day and looks a really nice course.

Should fit in your budget too.

Push your budget by another £15 a head and you can get on the New course at Sunningdale. I personally prefer the Old but the New is still absolute top quality, in fact a lot of people prefer it.

If you go to the Berkshires make sure you play the Red, much better than the Blue IMHO.

For best value though, I think Hankley is streets ahead.

Finally, have you considered an hour or so in the car and going down to West Sussex? Now that is a golf course!!

Think you will find Camberley Heath is in Surrey Foxie.

Sunday may be a problem, but I would go for Hankley Common. You need to watch out for the adders in the heather though.

St Georges Hill will be pushing your budget if you can play at the weekend. Need to play the Red and Blue nines, not the Green.

Red course at the Berkshire is great as well. If you fancy a trip into Hampshire look at Liphook.

Problem I have with HC is that the secretary at the time I was looking to join a club rejected my request to go onto the waiting list telling me membership was by invitation only. Perhaps he made the correct call - I would only be a pain in the a**e in such a place :)

Cracking course 've heard though never played it - even though it's only 5 miles from me.
