I certainly wouldn't pick this one as 'best'! Though it does have its merits for other attributes. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/golf/39700182

Carnoustie would certainly rank ahead imo, and there are a number of others that would rank pretty high! Royal Musselburgh, Monktonhall and Dunbar are 3 in East Lothian alone! Kings at Gleneagles certainly has a shout too!

I'd agree with you about the old course but can't really agree with your alternatives, though Carnoustie maybe. Dunbar in particular, although a good course, has a very uninspiring closing hole.

Although, in fairness, I'm struggling to think of any really great closing holes. I like dundonald, castle Stuart or even my own course at Duddingston but don't think any of those can be touted as the best in Scotland.... there must be better but most courses seem to fade out rather than ending with a bang! :)

The Scottish Golf Union rate our closing hole one of the finest in Scotland, Whalsay Golf Club in Shetland, Brain Noble a golf course architect says our 16th could possibly be one of the best holes in the world, it is a superb hole but that's going a bit over the top imo.

18th at our place is supposedly in the top 10 hardest closing holes, and I can understand why, but it's a bad hole IMO.

The last hole on the 1st 18 at Hazlehead cooncil course in Aberdeen is a better hole than 18 at St Andrews, not that it would ever be voted as such.

Like FD, I'm struggling to think of a great finishing hole. Carnoustie probably tops it for me, with an honourable mention for Castle Stuart too.

I would agree with the poll. 18 at the Old Course is a fantastic finishing hole.

It is short enough to make a birdie a real possibility. But, a shot that rolls back into the valley of win or one beyond the hole makes getting a par a real challenge.

I don't agree about Carnoustie. Just being stupidly difficult does not make it a good hole.

I can't even remember the 18th at Musselburgh, couldn't have been that good.

18th on the King's at Gleneagles sprung into my head straight away. The 18th at The Glen in North Berwick may not be the best hole but it must be one of the most spectacular. The Old Course must be up there just for the history and the fact you finish in the town and always with an audience. Hon mention for Dunbar and Royal Troon.

I'm struggling to think of good ones but a couple that come to mind are Royal Troon which has some very well placed bunkers for the drive then more protecting the green and OOB immediately behind. Also, my old club Gourock is good. Not necessarily for the toughness but it has a fantastic view across the Firth of Clyde and in the right conditions is driveable over the corner for the REALLY big boys but get it wrong and it can get pretty ugly.
I like Carnoustie although I always seem to play that hole well ;)

18th are Leven Links, up there with the toughest and best...

Certainly another I'd rate higher than TOC's!

Btw! Apologies for misleading! The article/poll was for the Best hole - irrespective of whether closing or not! I'd also rate The Road Hole as better any day!

Old Course and Carnoustie for me. Castle course is not a bad one either. The view on the 17th at the Castle is a stunner.

Definitely not the 18th at Trumps place in Aberdeen.

I think the 18th at Donald's would be up there, if it was 50 yards shorter.

Visually stunning, but too long IMHO, although think Rick was either near in two or on in 3.

Here here Gordon, great shout about Gourock.

Definitely too long playing into the wind. Just what you want at the end of a six hour round, a slog down the last. Rick did hit the green in three. He creamed a driver and then two three woods to get on the front.

The 18th is not even close to being the best hole on the old course let alone in Scotland. By what logic can the 17th be beaten out by the 18th as the best hole in the country when it is meant to be the best par 4 according to this lot.
