So I shall shortly be community about 140 miles a day of which I'd say 3/4 are duel carriageway or motorway.

I'd like comfort, a smooth effortless ride, a very nice interior to be in, high spec, economical yet with a bit of power, but not too racy. I'd like a relaxed journey - gone are my days of thrashing down the motorway as fast as I can.

It also has to be big enough to fit say 4 adults, my golf bag and trolley and 2 kids - not all at the same time mind!

Any suggestions?

It might not match your high spec criteria, but 18 months ago I bought a 1.6 diesel Ford Focus, after getting rid of my 335d 3 series estate.

It has munched up the motorway miles easily and if driven at 60-70 for a good motorway run will average 60 mpg. I've averaged 55 since I bought it. Ok it's interior is fairly basic, as you would expect in a 57 plate focus but it has done its job brilliantly. Plenty space in the back for 2 adults. Space wise my golf trolley and bag don't both fit in the boot, so I just lay the bag on the back seat. Not an issue if it's just me, but not sure how I would work it if I had to give someone a lift who had a trolley and bag too.

Audi A6 would tick those boxes - should be able to pick one up with 70k on the clock for that money - but it's good for another 100k miles. Mine has just ticked over 200k miles and it's still a nice smooth ride.

Got to be something that will last, 2.5-3k miles a month will soon rack up the miles. Check that things like timing belt have been changed at the right interval otherwise you'll be looking at big bills to keep it going.

I'd go diesel Ovtavia or possibly Mondeo both tried and tested for that sort of use.

We bought a four year old 2 litre TDI Skoda Octavia estate last year to replace a BMW 5 series. 60+ mpg and great performance with amazing space in the back seats. Great car.

How about an older Mercedes coupe automatic, run forever and have a very high spec, power and quiet interior. Father in law picked one up for £450 recently, travelling Wales to scotland regularly and thinks its a great car, if it does pack up at that cost so what.

Hyundai i30 or i40 are worth looking at.
Fabulously economical and some have a good spec too.
Also, I'm pretty sure they are chain driven so no cambelt to worry about.

Audi A6 is a very good car. The Ford Mondeo is also very good and the service costs are reasonable. I would suggest one of these at the best spec you can get for the money.

I had very very similar requirements and after much research and a good deal I ended up with a Mondeo (never thought I would see the day).........can't say I'm disappointed with any aspect of it. Does eat up front tyres though, but I probably driver too hard

Mate of mine has a BMW 2 litre diesel. He bought it a few years ago with 3,000 miles on the clock and recently sent me this photo from the hard shoulder at J15a on the M1,

Definitely go for an automatic??
I'd never go back to a manual for day to day driving.
Stick with Audi, Mercedes or Volkswagen in my opinion.
