Over the last 20 years I've suffered with a bad back due to a combination of disc and muscular issues. My physio is a keen golfer and advised me to keep playing as it would help retain my flexibility and strengthen my muscles however over the last couple of years if I played more than twice a week my back would be in tatters and I'd need several days off to recover.

Last week after reading an article on Shiatsu back massagers and the benefits they can offer I decided to take the plunge and buy a Scholl model reduced from £149 to £75.

I'd played on the Monday and it arrived on the Wednesday before club night so just before I set off I sat in the chair for 15 minutes with the full works and enjoyed a very pleasant massage which pushed and manipulated my muscles relieving all tension and stiffness from the 336 mile drive the day before.

I played a good round and was asked if I could play the next day. To cut a long story short, I played Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday taking a massage before playing and after.

This morning there's very little stiffness or tension and in between I've also been working in the garden which is generally a recipe for disaster.

I was sceptical before buying however, over the last few days my iron striking has been pretty good due to the lack of tension/stiffness in my lower back and I'm now enjoying my golf again without worrying about the consequences of playing 2 days in a row.

It could possibly be the best £75 I've spent.

That's very encouraging news and a massive relief for you.
I might follow suit as I've not played for 2 months due to an injury. Physio says I seem to have pushed a disc out slightly and this presses on a nerve causing a dull ache down the front of my leg. Been doing exercises which are helping, but I think golf will cause discomfort as I've done a couple of swings.
Is this similar to what you've experienced ?

I had two ruptured discs which my doctor treated as a muscular damage for 10 yrs until I saw the works physio who diagnosed the ruptured discs. Basically I would get a build up of pressure and stiffening in my lower back before everything would seize up and then over night I'd find I had to roll out of bed onto the floor and then climb up the bed to get up in the morning. Often I would have a week or two where I couldn't straighten up with pains running down my backside and leg and my back muscles going into spasm.

This was when my back was at its worst a few years ago, however when I get the warning signs, I lay off, do the physio exercises and can generally avoid the hands and knees scenario.

During the summer when I'm playing golf, apart from general stiffness and minor discomfort my back is usually ok unless I do something stupid or over do it by playing too often.

Since buying the back massager the muscular tension which in itself causes several problems such as spasm has been greatly relieved. If I wake up with a slightly stiff back 15 minutes in the chair makes a big difference and when your playing golf it is this tension which creates all sorts of problems. Stretching and a proper warm up help but the actual manipulation and working of the muscles by the massager seem to have given me that little bit of flexibility and freedom of movement that make all the difference.

This combined with the reduction in stiffness and pain are what prompted me to write the post. As with anything like this it is always best to seek medical advice first.

Dave B, very encouraging to hear and I hope it continues to work for you. I may 'watch this space' and see how any other purchasers fair with it.

Have you seen a Doctor or just paying for private physio?

This is the one I bought.

The write up's are very encouraging and it massages the base of the spine up to shoulder blades. It doesn't massage above the shoulders or the neck however if like me you suffer with stiffness in the lower, mid back and lower shoulder muscles it does a very good job of freeing these muscle groups up.
