I am going to be putting on my annual Grand National Bet and plan on the odd bet on the Majors throughout the year. I have always been old fashioned and headed down to the bookies for these, cash in hand. I see plenty of deals etc for online betting sites and wondered which, if any, is the best for the very occasional punter.

If you want the best odds then Betfair is number 1 you just have to work out if the commission they take from your winnings will offset other bookies prices who dont take commission.

The problem you will have is that all online bookies are the same, just week to week their offers for new customers are different.

My honest advice is carry on doing what our doing, nip down to the bookies cash in hand and dont open any accounts online. It is far 2 easy to access when drunk!

For an occasional bet Id go elsewhere than betfair, better on one of the bookie sites where you get best odds guaranteed, can easily back each way and will get more each way places on big races.

Best option if betting horses and/or football currently is probably bet365

On line bookies eh? Never heard anything about them at all, you'd have thought that they would do a bit of advertising on TV, especially in the advert breaks in between sports programs ;)

I have a Betfair account that I use for the very occasional bet, Golf Majors, Grand National, Derby and SPOTY (got 18 to 1 early on Brad last year, in your face Betfair). The odds are generally better on betfair but as already mentioned they take off commission, which they fail to mention when they do the comparison adverts. Can't remember if they give you your stake back as well or not.

To be honest if you are a casual gambler then the best odds ain't going to make much of a difference, as I imagine you won't win. Casual gamblers very rarely do. I do remember reading in one of the golf mags in a section on betting on golf that the worst thing you can do if you bet on sports is have just one account as the odds vary so much. But I don't take it that seriously. I suppose you could chose the one that is doing the best offers, you always see one giving you a free £10 for your first bet or something like that.

I'd go Bet365 for fixed odds or Betfair for exchange betting.

I recently opened a couple of new accounts with others and both peed me off enough for me to close the accounts. Bwin and Paddy Power, not recommended by me.

Avoid PaddyPower.

They have closed me out today due to me having a recent winning streak.

Crooks,total crooks.

not just PP that will do that, all the books do it sadly. Real shame its not like shop prices that if they offer a price they have to lay it to whoever wants to bet (upto a minimum stake)

Yes I know, what has happened though is my substantial amount that was sat is now not sitting with them but in my bank account.......chances are they would have netted a fair chunk of it but now they won't.

Maybe they have done me a favour. Mind you it'll probably just get pished against the wall now instead.;)

That top bit, what does that mean? I've just opened a Bet365 account (which was a godo move from the sounds of it), who offer £200 of "free" bets as I've put a £20 credit in my account (Grand National, Masters etc) but I have to rollover 3 times before I can withdraw. But I have no idea what this means lol.

Rollover 3 times means to bet 3 times the amount you get in bonus, so if they give you a £20 bonus you have to bet £60 before you can withdraw the £20 they gave you (ie you cant just bet the £20 win and then withdraw it all including the bonus)

Ah right-o. That'll be me done then, I'm useless at betting! Can I withdraw any actual winnings from money i deposited though?
