What makes a great playing partner? How long does it take you to work it out? Any nightmare stories or funny moments about playing golf with people for the first time?

Best ones? Just mates who are good, quick players and enjoy a bit of banter on the course.

Worst.... Stood on the 1st tee as a single player at a municipal and just about to tee off. Pro came running out saying another single had just turned up and would I like to pair up with him? Worst golfing experience of my life! After the introductions, the guy pulled a club out of his hire set bag and turned to me and said "How do you hold these things?"

He had never held a club in his life before

The worst playing partner is someone who storms off to the next tee after they three-putt and leave you on the green to finish the hole, put the flag back in, and pencil the scores!!

If in a 4BBB someone who doesn't take a three wood for safety and not even reach the ladies tee :D

The best playing partners are the ones that share the same attitude towards the game of golf as I do - enjoyment being a key factor , a good bit of banter.

The worst is the silent serious type who just doesn't talk and powers off to his ball without having general chit chat. Also someone who is oblivious to any General etiquette and pace of play

for me it has to be someone who isn't super serious and likes a good natter.

Also someone who can tolerate my tourettes and absolute pants golf helps aswell :)

Best - someone who keeps up a good pace of play, doesn't take things too seriously and has a good etiquette.

Worst - someone who lets all the bad shots really get them down causing a tense atmosphere

Homer, Fragger and Saint Hacker at the Grove. I'll leave you to decide which category they fell into;)

To be honest everyone I've ever paired up with has been at the very least fine and I have met some decent types, especially when playing in the States as they seem to treat it as more of a fun day out. Worst I suppose I've played with is a chap who I was asked to play with at a course in Norfolk. And on the 1st tee he told me he likes playing quick and he was aiming for a 1 hour 30 to 45 round. But he seemed nice enough in the 20 seconds I got to talk to him throughout the round when he was not hitting a shot or just about jogging to get to the ball the hit the next one.

a bit of chat/banter is always welcome, nice to be with a good player to see the game played well and give yourself inspiration and ideas to your own game. Basic common sense to know things like stopping talking when someone is about to play their shot, bugs me that one!

Go on dear sir, enlighten us

I didn't think you'd ever played with me before Phil?

Sunday should be great for you then!

Best - someone who's as mad as me. Likes some sharp banter, and practices decent etiquette.

Worst - someone who rants at every bad shot, chucks his clubs and doesn't know when to shut up. I don't mind the odd bit of advice but I hate a coach... at a forum meet last year I was coached on the practice ground, and then all the way round. By the end of the round I'd christened the guy "should've." "You should've done this and you should've done that..."

Worst has to be the couple I played with at Royal Portrush last year - that was painful.

Apart from that, the worst I can remember playing with was a few years ago at RAGC, from the second we started all he did was moan constantly about the course, the highlight of which was a rant that the new trees weren't growing quickly enough. I've since learned that moaning is his default position.

For me, good PP's practice good etiquette, play at the right pace, converse when the time is right and appreciate the game for what it is, a leisure pursuit.

The worst PP for me is the one who doesn't shut up. Played with a guy this year who told me exactly what he was trying to do with EVERY shot, then told me what was wrong with his swing when it didn't happen......on EVERY shot (including putts) for the whole round.

Also told me what I was doing wrong on many occasions. Got a bit tiring by the end of the round.

I also don't care much for club-throwers, moaners or cheats.

I can't belive this has been allowed to pass without comment...
