I am used to many things at gigs, high food and drink prices etc but yesterday was a step beyond. The security staff were searching everyone for any food on you which was then removed. Water was allowed in but no soft drinks. If the smell was anything to go by there was no effort to spot more illicit substances. Then after removing my bottle of diet coke I then bought one in there at a sky high price then they take the cap off you so as you cannot make it last or even stock up for the whole gig. This fleecing of customers has gone too far now

You obviously don't frequent football matches or gigs. This has been common practice for ages now, removing the tops is to prevent them being used as missiles basically. I've learnt over the years to be a little more prepared for such occasions, especially now I'm taking my 7 year old to most things with me, who isn't able to drink a bottle of drink quick enough to justify not having a cap to the bottle. Sneak a bottle top in or do as I did yesterday, swipe one from the counter as he's undoing all the bottles.

Good gig though! If it's the same gig I went to.

its not just gigs though, service stations, airports, train stations. the retailer has a captive market! Buy it or go without!

Until us (ie the consumers) stop paying for overpriced food and drinks at places like this, they will continue to coin it in.

Thing is they have removed the choice. I was at the gig for 7 plus hours yesterday. Food and drink is essential but you ae checked for it on the way in and everything is taken off you so you have to buy. To then take the lid off a bottle of coke so as you cannot make it last is a joke

You will be telling me you have to have snacks on a round of golf next!!

Joking aside, i get your point, but what are YOU going to do about? nothing. You like the music/event, so you go and accept you are going to get fleeced. that or go hungry and thirsty... or simply dont go, but others still will and the cycle continues.

At gigs many years ago people would take said empty bottle of coke, relieve themselves in it, put the lid on and throw it. Quite a heavy and unpleasant missile. I think this is one of the reasons the lids are taken off although I am happy to be told otherwise.

Thankfully I am not a music fan so I don't get stripped by these places. I got mildly done in at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and pro golf tournaments can make the eyes water a little as well. None as bad as music events though, I may not go but I do speak to those that do. Anywhere you have a captive market leads to greed and the consumer always comes last. The searches have twisted the sitaution very much in favour of the venue and the food / drink stands (who to be fair have to charge high prices to cover the high charge they pay to the venue)

I can't even remember the last gig I went to by a "big name" band. Partly because I got fed up being ripped off with huge ticket prices and also paying a booking fee on top. I had tickets for a gig that got cancelled so ticket price refunded but not the booking fee - what a rip off. I especially hate all these "festivals", but that's a separate thread!

I do still go to a reasonable number of gigs but generally more obscure bands at small venues.

At gigs these days people still relieve themselves into said bottle and still hurl it into the crowd.....the end product being many tens of people get covered in the contents of the bottle and some poor soul still gets hit in the head with a still mostly full bottle of urine.

The absence of the lid has IMO made things worse.

I thought that would be the case. No decent reason I can think of for removing the lid. I did ask a steward at a football match why they did it but he didn't know. "I'm just told to do it mate". At least he was honest.

You haven't been truly fleeced unless you've Flown from Dalaman Airport.
You need to remortgage your house to pay for a McDonalds.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to hurl such objects at the sods that removed the tops, food etc? Not suggesting it be done though!

Simple answer. Whip the crowd (at the bar) into a frenzy over rip off prices, poor service etc and 'storm' it.
Free drink, result.

Seen it done on a few occasions, can't say if I was involved or not, but it works.

Look on it as a karmic redistribution of the wealth type thingy and it doesn't affect your conscience. :)

Or, roll over and accept it is a bloody rip off but don't let it spoil yer gig.

Buy Carling lager and save yourself the trouble, they've already filled the bottle with piss..

I was at a game at Stamford Bridge last year and my mate wanted a pint of bitter, "Only got small bottles mate" says the barman so I asked for two bottles of bitter in the same glass (plastic cup). "Can't do that mate, has to be one glass per bottle" so I asked him to give me two bottles two glasses (small) and one large empty glass. "Can't do that mate, the accounting's done by the number of unused glasses left at the end of the day", I questioned why the no doubt expensive "smart till" couldn't do the accounting but the barman wasn't sure. So we ended up with a pint of Singha for me (very nice) and two bottles of beer in separate glasses for my mate, however when I checked my change I discovered that he'd not charged me for the second bottle, of course I meant to go back at half time to rectify the matter but the queue was huge....

We were at Silverstone for the Moto GP. Same thing there with expensive prices for drinks and food BUT.........
There was no restriction on what you could take in. People where using trolleys to take in cool boxes, bags of food, drink etc and no problems whatsoever.

It's rip off Britain!

I no longer buy gig tickets if I can't get them first time out, I will not pay exorbitant prices anymore

I was asked £3.20 for a cheap bottle of orange (probably 50p in a supermarket) I told them to put it back in the cooler as I wasn't going to be ripped off!
