Can anybody help..i have just started to play golf..a few trips to the range to be precise...the clubs i use were bought second hand..needless to say they are dated somewhat..my question is what do i buy?..a local sports shop has dunlop max sets for £119..or internet rams for £129..etc etc the list goes on on and no matter where i look there is no help for pure beginners relying on mags (which only seem to cover the callaway/ping etc.leagues)..can any out here advise me on my first set?

I recently wrote into a magazine about this very problem so know exactly where you are coming from. I started out with a set of Hippo OS4 and they served me very well for my first couple of years playing. The woods I found particularly good, as was the hybrid. Until recently I was still using the putter. Got the whole set with stand bag for about £140.00 delivered through a shop on ebay. My wife had a set of Ram V Force but did not get on with them that well.

Hope this helps.

I started with a full set of Howson with bag for £99 and managed for a while. They weren't particularly user friendly but they are a set of clubs and if you can hit the ball with them then being fitted for a decent set later will improve your game enormously.

I started 2 Years ago with a set of Slazengers from a local well known sports shop, I played with them for a year and was getting no better. So I decided I need a new set I went to my local golf shop, I spent about an hour talking to the salesman he did not try to sell me expencive clubs he talked me through the advantages of the different clubs and what range of handicaps each set were made for.
I settled for a set of Ram FX9's which he said would be good for mid to high handicapers. Practice and games paid are paying off. I have gone from a 28 to a 23 in the last 4 months. When I get to between 18 and 16 I may go back to them and consider a better set, but if I'm still playing well with them I'll keep them longer.

I started off 3 years ago with a full set of Howson Hunters i got off ebay for £95 inc woods, they served me fairly well for about a year but i soon found myself wondering if a decent set would improve my play as the best score i'd carded using them was 112!!

Off i popped to my local pro shop and ordered a set of Mizuno MX17's, had them adjusted for my height etc and the first round i played with them i shot a 102. Broke 100 next time out and havent shot over 100 since.

My handicap has gone from 28 down to 19 in little over a year and a half!

hi, i,m new to the game myself and bought the dunlop max. i spent 9 months hooking and slicing my irons, then tying my self up in nots trying to figure it out, determined not to blame the clubs. i recently bought some mizuno mx 15's for 199 quid, they are an old model but, instantly there was a big improvement
