Hi there,

I have only been playing golf for about 6 months (2 months of lessons and most recently playing 9 and a few 18 holes) and was looking into joining a club. I've found a club near me (Sidcup GC) and was just looking for some advice as to if its wise to join a club this early on. I play about 3 times a week atm so It will save me a lot of money but Im still a rookie and am nervous about joining in the swindle events and such. How long had you been playing before you joined a club ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I personally would say get joined up early. If it saves you money, that's enough reason.

If you don't think you're good enough yet, then just playing 9 or 18 holes by yourself in teh evening will probably massively help, but I would say that as long as you can knock it round in 100ish, then you wouldn't slow up many swindles! Especially if when introducing yourself you explain where you are in your golfing career, I can't imagine many people would complain too much!

I joined a club when I took the game up. I had dabbled in my youth but I got stuck in and got some lessons, three months later I had a handicap and was getting cut as I was winning comps.

No better place to start than under a club and the guidance of a pro. My lessons were fortnightly and then monthly after 6 lessons.

Join asap and get stuck in. Playing with other golfers will undoubtedly help your game. Most folk at golf clubs are pretty friendly, and before long you'll know loads of people.

Playing 3 times a week you'll soon reach an acceptable standard (if you haven't already) and being an active member of a golf club and a swindle/rollup is definitely a good thing.

Wish I'd joined somewhere a lot earlier than I did.
If you're near Sidcup, take a look at Pedham Place too. Pretty friendly bunch from what I know, and they've a par 3 course as well as the 18. Might be a good introduction?

Defo get a membership, it's getting lighter so you'll be able to get out at night if time allows. The more you play then the better you'll get.

If your worried about playing with others, then you'll be able to play the course by your self and get to know it, then when you play with others it won't be as bad.
