Hi Stevo,

Welcome to the forum.

Not had much experience of Ben Sayers clubs, but they seem to be popular. My brother has a Ben Sayers rescue, it's excellent and only £30

Start with second hand set of half decent irons and just get them re-gripped, you'll get much better spec clubs than buying new for equivalent £ and the second hand ones will retain their value when you come to sell them on. On the other hand if you're minted and a few hundred quid is no biggy then why not buy some shiny new ones.
Manufacturers are changing their lines every year to suck us in, the actual clubs dont change at all - look at a new Ping G10 compared to an I3 - no difference whatsoever, just the graphics.
Dont be fooled!

MD Golf gear is worth a look as they use top components yet sell at bargain prices. MD golf Blackhawks are worth a look.

I'd say Benross was a good bet too. The clubs look smart and aren't too expensive.
On the other hand you might be able to get a good set of Progen clubs. They are good clubs and if you have a hunt around on eBay, you should find them at an excellent price

Just try before you buy and take some lessons. Quite often the pro who will give you lessons will also give you advise on what clubs suit your game.

I agree with Birdieman, Invest in a second hand set of Ping G2's, Callaway X18's or Mizuno MX20's. Great clubs that you can pick up at a fraction of the cost they used to be 2 years ago.

I've got a set of graphite M7's. I got these to replace a cheapo set of steels in which the head snapped off one club.
I've found these, so far, to suit me quite well - I get 10 to 20 yards more per club though whether that's due to the longer shafts, differences in club heads/lies etc, me improving or all three I don't know.

There is a gap though, as there is in most package sets. You'll get a 1,3 & 5 wood, 4-hybrid, 5-SW and putter (+bag)
you may find you want something above the 4. (I got a Ben Sayers M1 2-hybrid to fill it.)

Ram also do a set at about the same price, though I think the gaps worse as you don't get a 5-wood.

Whatever you get, try them out first. Dealers like American Golf will usually tape them up for you and give you a bucket of balls.

While I can't disagree with either junior or birdieman (I wouldn't dare), the guy's just starting and probably on a budget.
The M7 is a package, getting a set of irons, then adding putter, woods and bag is going to be more expensive.

On a similar subject I'm looking to get my first set of clubs but am very limited as to where I get them from as I have vouchers to put towards them and the only place they're accepted that sell clubs are Argos or JJB. Is it worth taking a punt on a set without trying them? Is there much difference in sets if like me you're a right-hander of average height (5ft 10)?

Hi....will look further into clubs.

Do what I did, get an old set off the pro (who's doing the lessons) or get down to your local muni and range.

I've had Mizuno Astron (£95), then Tommy Armour 845s (£120), then Mizuno T-zoid (£185) and updated 845s (£110).

Get a good quality cavity back that's a bit passed it, and you'll get a bargain.....

Don't get a half decent cheap set, you'll end up changing them if you get into the game and start to think (as we all do) that you'd play better with a really top model iron.
