Ben Nevis walkers have been asked not to throw banana skins on the mountain as they are effectively litter. They have been doing litter picks and banana skins are a real problem for them. Anyway, in the same article they posted how long it takes something to degrade:

  • Banana skins/orange peels - two years
  • Cigarette butts - 12 years
  • Plastic carrier bags - 10 to 1,000 years
  • Plastic bottles - 500 years
  • Crisp packets - 80 years
  • Tissues - A month
I've seen many a golfer throw banana skins into the rough, trees etc, I've chucked the odd apple core in the past although no longer. Something to ponder.

you see guys chucking Banana skins in the rough and Gorse all the time at ours, never got this myself its still littering, you put it in a bin.

Surely it's not just how long it takes something to degrade, but how it degrades and what the impacts are?

A banana or orange peel may take 2 years, but surely the end result is some kind of compost, whereas a carrier bag is likely to just be a pollutant.

Not encouraging littering, just think that how long something takes to degrade is only part of the story.

Once again you should be allowed to hunt these people with dogs. It's past a random irritation of mine.

Leaving aside how long it takes to degrade I'd have thought the animals and such would've scarfed this type of thing down long before it degrades (obviously not though)

I find it hard to believe a banana skin takes two years, in the time it takes me to play 4 holes after I've eaten one the skin is barely in one piece as I put it in the bin.

Heard this on the radio.
I think it had something to do with Ben Nevis , people leaving skins up a mountain it would take longer to degrade.
Don’t think it would take that long at sea level, especially in this heat.

Exactly, it's where I lifted the story. I hadn't thought about the temperature difference and how that could impact 🤔. The principal is sound though, they don't degrade within days or weeks, it is likely to be months.

Just don't.

Also - had a Email from club recently noting how some smokers have a little 'ashtray' on their trolley - and requesting that all smoker members adopt something of that sort.

That’s why we don’t see monkeys eating bananas up mountains .
I agree though it’s litter just like any other rubbish.
