hello again ,,,Ive been to my local shop to look at the Driver just to get an idea of the price's they are between 99--370 pounds,,,,the man in the shop advised me to book in to test some drivers out they have a big computer screen that you hit the ball to ,to do this it will cost 25 pounds with 10 pounds of the new driver if i choose to buy one

i don't know about you but when it comes to money i don't trust people trying to sell me something especially when the drivers are reaching 370 pounds

not sure how the session will go weather he will let me choose the driver or there is a selected few to try either way i hope i drive the best with the 99 pounds one & i would also like to know my swing speed

will let you know how i get on & witch driver i pick

I would personally gone to the Belfry to get fitted, there you hit out onto a range + they have Trackman that shows you all the stats you want to know. They then try different Drivers till the figures come out as they should and the service there is top class.
It costs £50 but you get this back in the shop if you want to buy something.

If you are in Notts then Bobmac was recommending the new custom fit facility at Newark GC that is not too far away. Aside from that DG in Lincoln is attached to a range and you can hit as many clubs as you like but you have to pay for balls if I recall. Most places will let you loose on a launch monitor for free or at least give the full cost of the fit against the cost of a club. Worth shopping around. Personally I use DG at Cambridge, great driving range where they will let you hit as many clubs as you want and give you as many balls as you need. Once you have reduced your options they have a full fitting bay with all of the necessary monitors plus you are hitting on to a range so can see the ball flight. I spent nearly 2 hours there when I last changed my driver.

Witch driver? Does it double up as a broom?

Which centre of fitting excellence did you visit? Tell us more about your golf - handicap, hooker/slicer, hit it too high/too low, stack and tilt or proper swing?*

There are many here who would advise you being wary of the big retail stores who have been known to, ahem, encourage purchase of brands with the best profit margins/sales incentives schemes.

* Just a little joke

There's no way I'd pay anything for fitting in a run of the mill golf store. Fair enough charging you for the service if you don't buy anything, but if I were to buy from them I'd want the whole fee waived or I wouldn't bother.

I went to the Belfry and as someone above said you get the whole amount back off of your purchase.
I also thought the price was ok. £250 for my 910D2 not long after they came out.

Without wanting to sound harsh, at this stage of your golfing journey I wouldn't spend a lot on a new driver if I were you. No, actually I probably would, but that doesn't make it right!

There's lots of very good drivers at bargain prices if you know roughly what you need.

Expensive doesnt always mean better, try as many as you can however it's more important that you get the right shaft which can only be done at a custom fit. You wouldn't by a £300 suit without get it tailored.

D2, you dont say what your handicap is and if you belong to a club, if you do your club pro should be able to advise you, if you are still developing your game imo I would not buy a very expensive driver just yet, try looking at 'last years models' always a bargain to be had there.

Best of luck

i think you hit the nail on the head ,,,i am still developing my swing ofter recently changing grip ,stance & swing witch i am practicing very hard

i have changed my clubs to the callaway bb 2008 model witch I'm happy with but i got given this second hand taylormade r5 dual ,,,so for Christmas i got 25pounds voucher & 12 callaway golf balls that worked out at 2.50 each my level of play isn't that good yet so there going back as well meaning i have 55pounds to put to a driver the place is called Golfsupport

I'd never pay for a fitting in an AG or similar and would never base any purchase on hitting into a net five feet in front of me and relying on a computer to tell me the data (unless they have Trackman of course). From my experience, a lot of these stores ramp the settings up anyway and a lot of the staff aren't able to interpret the data anyway.

How can you see the trajectory, the flight, the roll etc in a bay. Unless the store had a range I'd go to a driving range or a decent local club pro unless you opt to go to a proper fitting centre somewhere. Yes these charge but you tend to get independant advice (AG will try and flog you Yonex, Wilson or Nicklaus drivers) and they will carry many more shaft options than a normal store

I can understand them charging 25 quid for the fitting but only getting 10 pound when your just hitting it into a net 5 feet away doesn't seem like a fair deal, as already mentioned jsut go to an independant retailer where you can try as many as you like, and make sure its a place where they either don't charge or you get the money off a purchase

I would also recommend te Belfry. Been there twice for irons and a driver, each time they were the same price as online, when I actually got my irons they were cheaper than online and I also got a free carry bag

Look at the older models. I use the TM R9. As the R11 was out it only cost £90 instead of the £300 and odd price it had been earlier in the year.

Hi dreamer, you have to think about your personal circumstances to be honest. Can you justify buying a £300 driver and then this time next year having to replace as your golf swing has improved and you need something else. Ok you can sell it on fleebay and £100 back for it but do you want to loose that much money. Other option like has been said is to look at older models form the big boys. Taylormade are bringing out the RBZ and R11s drivers so the Burner Superspeed and the current R11 will be getting sold off at cheaper prices in places like American Golf and DIrect. Not sure on release date but it may be worth waiting for...

Couldn't agree more, you will get great value by buying a superceded model, and just because they are superceded doesnt necessarily mean they have been improved upon.

Agree with previous comment also about MD, Benross or the like you could pick up a bargain there.

Good luck!!

I never buy new models and work on the principle that if I buy Nike, Taylor Made or Callaway when they sell them off, I will be able to sell them on with minimum loss a year or so later.

As Arnold has stated the newer models don't always offer significant advanatages over older models and much of the new developments are to meet market requirements and keep up with the oposition on the marketing front rather than offering significant game enhancing improvements.

If you look at some of the tour pro's bags you'd be surprised how many of them don't carry todays latest top of the range clubs.
