Spent a good hour or so yesterday trying out a few irons and thought I would pass on my comments.

Firstly, following my comments in the past, I should put in a quick bit of praise for AG Kettering. Not at all like others I have been to, no pressure, helpful staff and a proper driving range. Will be going there again.

Anyway, on to the irons:

Wilson Staff DI9s: Pretty decent and long due to the agressive lofts. Other than the smaller, but longer, heads did not see them as much of a step up from the DI7s and they are £100 cheaper.

Taylormade R7: could not get on with these, felt overly heavy and a bit dull even on good strikes.

Mizuno MX 100: Great value and pretty impressive. The price for a full set 4-SW was a bargain and they struck a lovely ball. Came in as second favourites but was close.

Cobra SZ: Superb game improvement iron, long and very forgiving. The weight felt prefect and helped by a top quality Nippon shaft as standard. If I decide to change these will be the ones I go for.

Anyway, not changing just yet but thought I would post a few comments for those who may be in the market.

Did they have the MX200 to try? They have a big following on here.

I love days like that, having a play down the range.

They did but felt that the 100s were probably more suited to my game. More expensive forged irons are something for next year or the year after for me.

Thank you for that. I am interested in the Cobra SZ. I have a birthday in June and HID has already said yes. :D

I love trying loads of clubs on the range and especially demo days. I can be there for hours trying various clubs. Its so much better when you can hit clubs on a range and feel and see the shots rather than in a shop bay and reliant on a computer to tell you the outcome.

Interesting about the Cobra's. Its a brand I've looked at only in passing and only tried one model several years ago but I'll have a look at these next time I'm in AG. Not really in the market for new irons but always interested to see how different clubs perform.

Those SZs are getting some good write ups, I've only just got some new irons so I'm not in the market but these are practically tugging me back into it I have to sort out my fairways and utilities first though.

Does anyone know if they're the replacement of the S9 or FPs?

Thanks for the info!

Seems like a perfect day to me. Day at the range, decent advice or a demo day !!!
I do not think they are a replacement for the S9's as they brought out a version last year.
I have the S9 2007 version and i love them. Cant go wrong witht hem. They are a great game improvement iron.

Good Luck !!!

I assumed that they were a replacement for the FP irons as they are being sold at a cut price now (£199) whilst the S9s are still selling at near enough full whack.

So are we saying the Di7's are as good as the Di9's?

I'm really drawn to these, but also have the MX100's in mind, and now after this post the Cobra SZ's

I'm building quite a little portfolio I just need to make enough time to get out and try some of them, I was hoping to get a new set in time for Ascot this Friday but that is never going to happen now :(. Oh well the trusty old Hippo's will have to do.

Yes, in my opinion there was not much between the DI7s and DI9s and not enough to justify the extra cost
To me the MX100s and the SZs really stood out. Also liked the MD superstrong irons I tried the other week but will not get to try them on a range (no MD stockists with a range near me). The MDs would probably come third but may appeal to some as have 2 hybrids in the set. The only down side of the Cobras was that they were only 5-SW so would need to buy a 4i hybrid to fill the gap.
