Hi all,

Looking to join to a golf club next year (sidcup golf club) only problem is I don't know whether to join a 18 hole golf course or just join the 9 hole? anyone belong to a club that is only 9 hole?

Yes,
I was a member of a 9 holer, great condition as staff only had 9 holes to maintain, biggest issue was having a great front nine score then having to stand for 10 mins waiting to tee off again as it was a group from the course and one from the clubhouse. Great introduction to golf for me though.

I play out of one. 9 greens & 18 (17 really) tees, amazing /unbelievable what a different set of tee's make, not playing the same course 'twice'. Even if it was the same 9 again it wouldn't bother me. Our place is fairly well timed and people coming off 9 have priority on to #10 anyway.
I thought long & hard last year when leaving a true 18 holer but have no regrets personally.
Give it ago if you are thinking of it - whats the worst that can happen? 'Upgrade' the following year if you do not like.

I'm a member of a nine holer. I love it. Course is tighter than than a big course so the emphasis is all on accuracy. Greens are superb, no green fees only guests so never too busy. Only £320 or so a year so am happy to visit larger courses when it suits. Some people have a downer on 9 hole courses, but find a good one and its a true test.

I was a member of a nine holer until this year when I joined a 18 holer. I guess every case is unique, but personally it has been a great move.
Having the ability to prebook tee times, also having tees available in the afternoon if you are not playing in medal. (With the 9 holer basically all day is out of action as everyone comes back round to the 10th for them, your 1st)

That said my new course is in way better condition, facilities etc too - so perhaps an easier decision for me.

Out of interest mate what is the distance accross 18 holes?

It's only about 4500 yards. But theres no par 5's. Longest hole is 410 yards, shortest 165y. Par 62, which obviously means you don't get many shots to play with. It's definitely easier to shoot near your handicap on a larger course. A 3 ball gets round easily under 3 hours, happy days.

I used to play at a 9 holer. Big advantage is that if you don't have lots of spare time then it is easy to just play 9. Sounds obvious but really handy. Biggest issue at my old club was that they didn't move the tees around enough so second 9 was too similar to first. The course just became boring after a while. If your course mixes the tees up better then that should be less of an issue.

I was going to post about getting bored of a nine hoer even with two separate tees but assumed it was just me. I have played a number of 9 holers (Thames Ditton etc) and never enjoyed tem. Not sure why but I just prefer 18 (I'm just strange me thinks). I'm lucky that my course has two loops of nine so going out for a quick nine is rarely a problem and you've the option to then carry on if you want to

was a member at a 9 holer for 2 years, never had a problem until i got slightly bored of the same old same old.

wouldn't have a problem doing it again if it was a new course

That really depends on how much thought has gone into the positioning of the alternative tees. If it's just a case of lengthening or shortening the hole on the same line, there could be the element of sameness and the possibility of boredom after a while. If, however, the alternative tees are coming from a completely different angle and giving a much different ideal landing area then it makes the hole look and feel completely different.

I've been a country member at a 9 hole course in Scotland in the past and it's great fun. I do always wonder at the validity of handicapping though. How many times do you say "I wish I could play that hole again" in a round? At a nine hole course you do....every time! Don't care what anyone says it's definitely easier overall when you've already played the hole seen the affect of the wind, lie of the green around the hole etc. Great way of getting into golf club life for probably less cost but a full 18 hole course is where it's at really.

I too am a nine hole member, well until the year runs out. This being my first full year in the game, I'm positive I made the right choice starting out there, but things have moved on. I've no particular beef with it being only the nine but ours is long and straight, two things which I am not! Plus the fact it's feels like the windiest place on earth doesn't help either.
Bonus are being cheap, dead handy for a game after work. Plus some cracking fellas there. Deffo still use the place, just not as a member.
