Playing at Beau Desert today in my Captains Away Day.

Been on my list to play for a while and should have played it about 4/5 weeks ago but their Open got cancelled and rearranged due to thunderstorms!

My back seems to be holding up at the moment although I'm only playing once a week currently with a few swings in the garden, not what I'm used to but it takes a few days to recover.

I hit the ball well in the nets down at AG on Tuesday when doing my DNA stats for the MP54's, only a handful of balls but no twinges all the same so fingers crossed.

Weather looks perfect so hoping for a good day, pictures and report to follow....

I'm not jealous Robin - its been on my hit list for years. I must sort a two day trip out and play Little Aston too.

Enjoy your day buddy.

Regrets I have a few - and one is that in nearly two years of living in Cannock during the week - and knowing a member of Beau Desert - I never took a day off and took him up on his offer to host me as a visitor :(

I did pop up once one summer evening after work; parked up and had a little wander around. It looked v nice.

It was an excellent course, has to be the best Parkland/Heathland course I've played.

My format was 11 holes full handicap singles then in for lunch and then out as a team of 4 best 2 scores 3/4 handicap. I had a very good 11 holes as was 19 points on the turn but blobbed the 10th par 3, drove through the green into cabbage and never found the ball, didn't know what was at the back of the green and didn't take a provisional! Finished with 21 points for 11 holes.

Must have had about 6 birdie puts, didn't make any and think 3 of them turned into bogeys! The greens were fast and tricky to read at first, would need to play a good few rounds their to get used to the greens, best I've played on EVER.

Most of the driving holes really suited my shot shape with only a couple of right-hand dog legs which didn't. Made the mistake of still driving my 3w at the dogleg which ran too far across the fairways into straw so took only a 5w second time out.

Came in for lunch and then just seized up, couldn't get loose again and struggled and was almost limping form the 12th in, would have loved to have done the 18 first as some did and then the 11 as I would have appreciated the whole course first without locking up!

Some blind drives and 2nd shots, the worse being the 18th with no driving marker and not a clue where to take a line!, Both me and another partner off 7 drove too far into cabbage, you have to play it as a regulation par 5 and lay up as both of us after dropping a ball to finish the hole essentially birdie putted out, had we both not lost our balls off the drive down a fairway!

Good opening tee box, steep bank of cabbage to drive over to what is a short par 4, you just have to not think about what's immediately in front of you.

Didn't take any pictures after the start, the course mentally drains you also, never slept so well and long last night!

Anyone who gets the chance to play Beau Desert, do so, never put it off, its fantastic but take plenty of balls, if your wayward, you won't find them. Lost 1 ball on the 11 holes in the morning but after struggling from the start on the 2nd outing, I used old pick-up balls so wasn't fazed about loosing 4 which was far less than most it was reported.

Glad you enjoyed the day.
Fantastic course, really enjoyed our meet there.
6 birdie putts in 11 holes you really must be a .......t off 20

Off the tee and hitting the greens, or running up onto them as I played it a little like a links course, seemed to work very well, however, getting the little feckin' thing in the hole was another! The Si1 I was in the middle of the green in 2 with my 3w then 6 iron, then like many others, I 3 putted, could have been a great 5 pointer

I agree greens are really tricky,as I remember the 18th is the size of a football pitch.
Still a good return for 11 holes.

The 18th is a big green but you can't take it on in 2. The fairway has a huge amount of scrub halfway down which we ran into, completely invisible from the tee, in fact, you can't see the fairway from the tee box! Then theirs another load of cabbage just before the green so it should be played as a 5w, lay up with a 8 iron and then stiff a wedge as close to the pin as possible for a birdie putt, anything else is just far too risky!

Some great natural run off's from the raised greens which just disappear into deep grass ravines surrounded by heather, so beautiful, wanted to get the camera out more but you find yourself so mentally focused watching everyone else's putts for the slightest hint to help your own.

Christ mate your wrong.
Did you not here the story of Timgolfy.
Well he drove 371 yards on this hole, just before the rough in front of the green.
He changed his name to Tim371 off the back of it.
However it was his only good shot of the day.
Must agree a very pretty course.

As PJ above, agreed that it is a lovely track with excellent greens.

Disagree about 18, it is definitely on in two even from just short of the cross mounds and gorse etc. Difficult shot but definitely on.

I can't remember the exact yardages, but i'm pretty sure its just over 200 yards from the mounds to the green.
I've hit the green in two on a few occasions, and i don't consider myself a big hitter.
Wind and course conditions/time of year can make a massive difference to how difficult Beau plays.
Last time i played there was August last year, 25 mph winds and driving rain made it brutal, but always fair.

Nope, I was told that all the scrub across the full fairway was only introduced or added to recently so you've got to carry something like 300yds to clear it, anything around 250+ will roll into it, as I found out :(

Yes, I think if I took my 5w to be short of the scrub I'm not sure I would be confident to go for it, you'd have to land it and stop it on the green, difficult when their so fast! 5w, 8 iron lay up and a wedge looking for a birdie is god enough in my books, still to get an eagle yet but it wouldn't be chanced on that hole ;)

Glad you enjoyed the course Robin. Did you know membership there is less than KGC?

Shame it's more than 30 minutes away

Yes I did enjoy it although I'm not in the best condition to have taken it on fully on the 2nd time round. Took me 32 minutes to get their in rush our but made a wrong turn on the toll coming back and ended up on on the north bound M6 somehow!

I'd happily drive 30/45 minutes to play and be a member their, great facilities throughout.

And I bet they have more qualifiers than KGC.. ;)

Possibly so, but they only have "restricted membership" currently available which you have to apply for prior to full membership as theirs currently a 2yr waiting list!

Speaks volumes :)
