Hi All

Due to a house move I am looking to move club - I've only ever been a member of one club since starting golf so I'm not especially 'up' on the various courses around and the joining procedures.

It's too tight a timescale to move for the coming season (fees due end feb) but I'm looking to get some research done this year with a view to joining somewhere new for next season.

To that end I'm looking to see if anyone has any knowledge of courses around the Bearsden area just outside Glasgow? I know there are places like Windyhill (seems reasonable in terms of fees) and the more expensive Hilton Park with two courses etc but a more expensive subscription?

I'd just be grateful for anyone that has experience of courses in the area in particular how busy they tend to be and the general all year round condition?

many thanks in advance

its a perfect time to move, why do you think its too late?

Where are you now and can you give an idea of budget and type of course/club you want as there are many in the area, think I've played them all at some point

cheers for the reply. I think a lot of places need fees paid by end of February (including place I'm currently a member of) and I want to do a bit more research and maybe play some places before I decide - and that's unlikely to happen in the next few weeks...unless I swap my powakaddy for an Ark..! :-)

I'm further west of Glasgow just now but with a couple of kids it's too far to travel so having moved to the Bearsden area I'm now looking for somewhere closer to home so I can maybe get games in the summer evenings during the week.

I'm currently paying about 650 per annum for subs at the moment.

In terms of type of club - the main negative of my current place is condition. Not great in the summer and in the winter it's always temp greens, winter tees and winter matts etc regardless of the severity of the winter. It's got to the stage where I almost don't play in the winter because it's so bad.

I don't play in loads of competitions or have the time to do much socially in a club (aforementioned young children!) and most of my golf can be evenings for 9 holes or social 18 holes with family - so to that end the condition of course and the ability to get on and play without booking 2 weeks in advance are the two most important factors.

I still want somewhere good and would pay between my current level and to about £1,000 I think for the right place.

cheers mate for any advice you can give.

Theres a few within 5/6 miles , I like Haystons, Milngavie, Douglas park, Kirkintilloch.. I don't like Esporta Dougalston. I've never played Windyhill, Clober or Balmore but Balmore gets good reports, Hilton park I was told it's quite hilly. best of luck.

where are you just now? out the V.O.L way? just gauging similar courses for you, before recommending as there really are loads and all different in condition and membership styles

Windyhill is not bad but not the most testing course in the world, IMO it also seems to suffer in the wet a bit more; it also had a total lack of catering last time I was there, hopefully this has changed.

Milngavie is enjoyable and a superb setting, I blagged a freeby there when I was looking for a new club last year.

I haven't played at Hilton, although I have heard (second hand mind you), that it can be a nightmare to book a comp tee time due to a particularly convoluted system.

Description of the OP's current club certainly doesn't sound like the vale, only ever saw temps there when there was snow on the ground or it was frozen solid.

ha ha....! My cards couldn't get any closer to my chest! I'd prefer the focus to be on my future club as opposed to my present one....! ;)

Fair do's mate. I'd suggest giving Susan Woods a ring, she's the Sec at Milngavie, she gave me a free round when I was looking for a new club. They also do a five day membership which might suit you.

cheers mate, much appreciated - I will do that. I've only ever played the Dougalston course in the area which is now part of Virgin gym and I wasn't too impressed.

A few people have said Milngavie is good and always really nice condition so it's definitely one to try.

ok, no problem, it was just to help me with similar type clubs if that's what you were wanting.

Milngavie- nice layout, some nice holes, nice clubhouse dont tend to cut the greens enough midweek IMO, plus after wet warm weather it is midge hell. Road in and out is small and unlit.
Hilton Park- 2 courses, both a good challenge but both are very hilly, always in good condition, clubhouse is fine but large membership, dont know about the booking system.
Clober- not bad but too many par 3's (think they have 7 afaik) surrounded by houses and it can feel a bit claustrophobic.
Windyhill- Braid course and some really nice looking holes, it is set on a hill and it's always windy hence the name, clubhouse and membership is good- catering was always good but maybe something has happened in the last 2 years.
Douglas Park- like this course and clubhouse (1st tee along the railway is a tad intimidating), decent but not long course.
Balmore- nice course, good challenge, decent clubhouse, not great in the wet- but where is if its not links these days-
Kirkintilloch and Lenzie (both easy from Bearsden depending on exactly where in Bearsden your living. Kirkintilloch the longer and better of the two but Lenzie is always in great condition especially the greens, big membership but easy to get a game.
Dougalston- don't, just don't
Cawder (williamalex reminded me as well), 2 courses, one on a hill and one flat- expensive and a decent challenge, nice layout
You might like to consider Clydebank&District GC (3 mins from Windyhill) decent course for the amount of time you will be playing.

I'm sure there are others, so feel free to ask and I'll offer an opinion.

You also have Hayston GC, but myself I would pick Balmore which looks to be the case next year ( I'm paid up for this year ) full membership is just under £800 & for an ass. member about £550.

They are all decent courses. I'd join the one closest to where you live as you'll make more use of it, 9 holes at night, hour on the putting green etc...

Used to be a member ofF Bearsden Golf Club, course very average which is a pity as clubhouse, catering etc is great.

Clober is terrible with a few blind holes, and a big hill!

Douglas Park - snooty and prone to flooding

Windy hills - great course, financially had some issues

Dougalston- no club feel as really a sports centre

milngavie - I liked. Great setting, true about wee windy road mind you

Most of these clubs [possibly bar Douglas] would give you a freebie to try.

It's a great area to live in for Golf, Schools etc

Join Largs and travel.

I'm sure from your fee's you were at Gourock. Late developing course due to clay and rock undersoil but on its day it can be fabulous. Best views also.

I wouldn't want to be a member of a club that involved crossing the Erskine Bridge at the moment, roadworks are scheduled to finish mid June, if they finish on time.
