Don't be surprised to see this sort of sideways navigation becoming more of the norm. With tablets like the iPad becoming more popular, and Windows 8 coming next year (I think), the trend seems to be pointing to a more 'tiled' approach to navigating around. Apparently it's supposed to reflect a magazine like layout. I personally quite like it. Only need to click a few times to see all of the content in nice clear blocks, with no need to wait for pages to load. Agree about the weather page though. That does look pap! Back to Geeksville for me!

Hate it but then I really am becoming a grumpy old man. With Bob, Snelly and Smiffy as my role models I think i've got the knack. It looks too trendy and just doesn't look pleasing or functional

I'm probably older than all the grumpy old men (and 1 woman) who don't like the change (why do the British hate change?). Play about with the new layout for a few minutes and you will see that it is a huge improvement.
