I practice my short game quite a bit and use the gap wedge a lot. I'm wondering that while the wedge rules are as they are I should buy another GW at the end of the year for use in competition and use my other one for practice.

What's the life expectancy of a wedge used three times per week for 2x 40 min practice sessions and a round of golf?

At our standard Tiger, I don't think we'll notice much difference between new rule wedges and old rule wedges so I wouldn't worry. Unless you hit a blindingly good shot you'll see very little change in the amount of spin. I believe all wedges made from now will conform to the new rule(I think), those already in stock can be sold off. But we can use them till 2024 - they'll be long dead by then unless you play once in a blue moon.

General rule - when they don't spin enough!
There's no hard and fast rule about it. Its when you feel you're not getting the same amount of stop on your shots. Some wedges may last years if you don't play full shots with them. The Tour guys will change wedges probably 3 times a year!
