I had a lesson for the first time yesterday, pro said I should try changing my grip from a 10 finger or baseball grip to an interlocking or overlapping as this would give me more control.

Other than that he said my game just needed little tweeks most notably on allignment.

I have tried both of these grips before but found it felt unnatural to me.

What grip do you use and would you recommend anyone trying to change?

Interlocking for me. Tried the baseball grip for approx. 5 mins at the range once but switched back to i/locking once I had stopped shouting "fore". I found that the baseball grip meant that your hands seemed to work independently, which I didn't like.

overlapping grip for me.

Any change you make to your normal swing/grip will feel unusual but stick with it for a while at the range and you will get the feel for it no problem.

I used interlocking until I lost the top of my left index finger in '91 after that I had to go to overlapping. It was weird but after about 12 months I got used to it. Every now and then when I am playing cack, I try inter again but it feels alien to me now.

Anybody else notice that in the last open John Daly had both his little and ring finger interlocking?
Tried it down the range and couldn't hit a beach ball!

I use the interlocking grip, started with baseball but my hands started to rotate on the grip as my swing improved and became faster.

Its whats more natural for you and is more comfortable. Yes interlocking and overlap are seen as being the norm, however the baseball grip didnt stop Ronan Rafferty being a European order of merit winner and winning many tournaments.

Golf should feel natural to you!

Overlapping for me.
miss-mini-realgolferuk plays with a baseball grip.....always thought it was for kids/beginners??? (sorry toad)
Tiger uses the interlocking, as did J.N.
90% of folks use the overlapping.....personaly, I'd try the interlock if you can get on with it.....

I'm sure Paul Azinger is a baseball grip player.

I can switch grips from interlocking to overlap with no problem. I was predominantly using interlocking up until a few months ago, seem to be favouring interlocking just now.

I'm pish with either grip!

Cheers Dave,

No offence taken mate, but do you honestly think changing my grip would improve my game, or should I just stick with whats comfortable and seems to work (most of the time)anyway?
I will try the interlocking at the range this week but know it will take a while to get accustomed to the change.

changing grip does feel uncomfortable but it doesnt take too long to get used to. i used t have an interlocking grip but changed to overlapping it felt better to me in the end!

Your grip is a little like the tyres on a car Toad, with out a quality setup you are going to suffer and lose on performance. Your hands are the only contact you have with the club, how you grip it partially dictates how well you can swing. I use the Vardon overlay grip and was advised that only children or those with small hands should use the baseball grip.

Tiny hands, thats me. :(
I have been swinging a club in the garden for last half hour neighbour thinks I'm mad and the overlap feels much better than interlocking, so I am going to give that a go instead will let you know how it goes.

I was cack handed until I was about 25. Changed to baseball until about 6 months ago and now us the Vardon (overlapping) grip and my game has improved with every change I've made. Still crap though.

brendy - you are a techy genius!....how did you get the photo up? - good work!!

PS - anyone know anything about blisters on right hand, almost stopped playing today after 14 (battled onto the end) with a whopper on my fleshy pad (ooh, er, missus)
am I letting go with the grip at the top??

Still hurts like hell. Never had this before....HELP...

Sounds like you are letting the club wobble about a bit during your swing. How loose are you gripping the club? We are often told not to strangle the clubs but it sounds like you may have been gripping too lightly. Must admit I've never suffered with blisters.

my lad complains of blistering even with a glove on still gets it on both hands..whats going on ??

My lad used to get blisters on his gloved hand. Turned out his little finger nail on his right hand was digging into his index finger on his left hand with his interlocking grip. A slight adjustment with the grip soon solved the problem.
