I've noticed how over the last couple of seasons all the managers and pundits keep referring to "the Barclays premier league or "what a Barclays league we have". It makes my skin crawl with this insistent reference to Barclays. All I can imagine is the sponsors have insisted that everyone keeps mentioning their name. Well I'm glad I don't bank with em.

They pay for that right and if its got you to post about it on another forum mentioning their name, well, mission accomplished

From a personal point of view I don't understand the whole concept of sponsorship. My business account is with Barclays as when I started with a poor credit rating they were prepared to give me an account and I've been with them since. I didn't watch the Liverpool v Chelsea game today and think I really must check out what Standard and Chartered can do for me or what new TV Samsung have got to offer.

If I'm looking for a new product I will google for the cheapest price/best offer for me and then go with that. If I go in to a pub and they have Stella or Becks on draught I'll buy one of them rather than ask for Carlsberg as I've seen it on a football team shirt and walk out if they don't have it. And as a Colchester fan I won't be looking to buy a new house and think that I must buy one that has been built by Weston Homes. Can anyone explain how these companies make a return on their investment?

Sponsorship gets a name into the media

Since sponsoring Liverpool Standard Chartered and Warriors business has reportedly increase by close to 30%

It's the same with adverts on telly - they attract people to their product

That's what sponsorship does.

The pub analogy doesn't quite work - I guess if you went into an offy & they had almost every major brand of larger, you might pick Carlsberg, or if someone asks what beer you fancy, you might say Carlsberg because it's the first one that comes to mind. You might fancy a change from your regular choice of larger, and try Carlsberg for a change.

I think as well, it also makes the brand more 'established' and make them a bigger brand / company, from a shares / stocks / shareholders point of view. I guess that must bring in more profit in turn, somehow.

If it didn't work, no-one would do it!

Hugely important.

Big companies are not looking for tax write-off from Sponsorship! Even if they write off 26%, they are still paying 74% of whatever the sponsor, so to get no return is simply bad business!

Companies like Standard Chartered are primarily looking for Brand Awareness and a little bit of 'we are here too' defensiveness. Actual Sports Clothing companies are in a slightly different position as the sponsorship is much more directly aligned to sales.

I don't buy all that guff, it is still English League Div One to me.
Won't be long before we have the Wonga League supported by Poundland.

Re Brand awareness any non Scots know who sponsors the Scottish leagues.
I follow it and I haven't a clue. My best guess would be Irn Bru.
