So, who has consistently produced good studio output for a decent length of time ?

Beatles: 8 good years 1962-1970

Queen: 7 good years 1973-1980 (Hot space was awful although A Kind Of Magic was a return to form in 1986)

Zepellin: 7 good years 1969-1976 (In through The Out Door was awful, then Bonzo kicked the bucket)

What about U2, REM, Radiohead, Paul Weller (inc Jam/Style Council), AC/DC, The Who, Oasis, The Spice Girls, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, etc ?

ZZ Top - still going strong after 40 years!
Rush - 35 years young.

Guess you have to include the Goerge Micheals of this world if you like that sort of thing. And Take That! (or Have This! as they should be called now they're getting a bit older!).

Its interesting that numerous bands that split years ago are re-forming and being sucessful. Does this show a lack of commercially viable current music? Or is it just us oldies remebering the good old days?

cant count Rush (good band that they are/were) in the "good studio output" category. i think Distant Early Warning was the last goo dtrack they had - became a bit poopy by then ( yeah i'm an old cynic)

Iron Maiden 1980ish to somewhere near now ?

Thin Lizzy 1973 to 1986

Melissa Etheridge (1988 to a couple of years back)

Yeah, i'm working my way through the CD collection .....

What about U2 - yes, REM - who?, Radiohead - yes, Paul Weller (inc Jam/Style Council)- yes, AC/DC - yes, The Who, Oasis, The Spice Girls - w.t.h?, Rolling Stones yes, Pink Floyd,- yes
I bought one REM album, never needed another....the same with Oasis; both great bands, but couldn't "change/evolve" enough for me.

Radiohead evolved, but everything from Kid A onwards sounds like pish to me, and The Bends is one of my 3 favourite albums by anyone.

With you 100%. :)

Sometimes evolution isn't good for a band. In Radiohead's case, I think that's true. But, bands that simply go on the same way aren't doing themselves any favours either.

The Manic Street Preachers always wanted to write albums their way but have been yo-yo'd to and from a "commercial sound" by their label. Their best material is somewhere in between. Essentially, you can turn a weak song into a good one with the right production and vice-versa.

Although I'm not an Oasis fan, the spine of the songs has always been good, it's just a shame they were never persuaded to experiment with the overall effect. U2 still churn out some cracking songs but with them also, the "flavour" of the albums has sometimes worked against them.

Some of you will remember Def Leppard. The "Hysteria" album produced by John "Mutt" Lange was the ultimate pinnacle of production over substance. Lange's attention to detail in the studio probably over-shadows even Peter Gabriel. But Def Leppard never managed to escape that expectation from thereon and fizzled out. Pity......quality work that eventually just became boring and predictable.

Anyhow, back to the studio for me. Currently finishing off track (not mine) as we speak.

I dont think that Mick Fleetwood is all there.

Dont forget it was the late Keith Moon who said "A Drummer is a Psychopath Who Likes Hitting Things"

I rest my case

But there again they had 10 years of solid output under their belt by then. Absolute class and the best band ever by a country mile. Just YouTube La Villa Strangiato or Xanadu or 2112 or Tom Sawyer live. Simply the best.

I was just going to say Status Quo. Some extremely embarrassing material from the 80's onwards, but these guys have been going since 1969 with their first hit "Pictures of Matchstickmen" albeit with a few line up changes from qround 1983.
Saw them at Donnington Parks "Monsters of Rock in 82 and they were awesome!

As previously said, Rush are still going. Recent tosh but some absolute classics in their grand repertoire of material. Neil Peart just has to be the best drumer in the world. Fact.
