Thinned a shot from a bunker, ball embeds itself in the earth on the front lip of the bunker.

I deemed it unplayable, and took a penalty drop (backward into the bunker)

Having deemed it unplayable could I have taken relief sideways (therefore not in the bunker)? PP's and I had agreed it was still 'in the bunker' but having thought about it im not sure.

The ball was 100% past the edge of the bunker (if look directly from above), I had to dig it out to retrieve it.

The ball is deemed to lie in the part of the course where it enters the ground so it's still in the bunker and you proceeded correctly (decision 13/4)

Provided the 'lip' is actually part of the bunker. If it is grass-covered, then it's not - as per definition of 'Bunker'. But typically, the 'lip' is not grass-covered.

Yep, grass on top of 3 inches of earth wth bunker beneath.

There can be grass on top of the 'lip'. Foxholer is referring to bunker faces that are covered in grass with no 'earth' border. If you've got sand then earth/soil and then grass then the edge of the bunker is where the grass starts.

It all depends on where the ball is embedded. If it's through grass then it's in the bunker, if it's though sand/soil etc then it's in the bunker.

edit. To add a bit more, stacked turf faces consisting of turf and earth are not in the bunker (even if your ball is in the earth part)
