Playing a round with a friend i putted from the fringe at abut 40ft and my ball stopped between the hole and the flag. The flag was leaning forward which stopped the ball from falling in but when i straightened the flag the ball drooped in.
This hole was for £50 so my friend said it doesn't count as the ball didn't fully drop in the hole.

Now i know if i was on the green and hit the pin i would be penalized but as i was on the fringe which was about 2 ft wide this shot is fine.

I decided to tie the hole to save any arguments even though i was 2 shots better.

17-4. Ball Resting Against Flagstick

When a player’s ball rests against the flagstick in the hole and the ball is not holed, the player or another person authorized by him may move or remove the flagstick, and if the ball falls into the hole, the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke; otherwise, the ball, if moved, must be placed on the lip of the hole, without penalty.

Pretty basic stuff - in fact one of the first 'rules' I ever learnt when a kid. Surprised your buddy didn't know - or indeed thought to the contrary - and you guys playing for £50 suggests not infrequent players. Worries me a bit how little some folk know of the rules (never mind that in my mind playing for a large sum of money like £50 is not good)

Too much money on a hole for a friendly IMO. You should have been able to at least have the debate and stand your ground. Going into it after the fact could sound like sour grapes - and you don't want to cause ructions and bad feelings with your mate when you go to him now and ask for the £50.

I'm a member of a club so play by the correct rules week in week out and make an effort to learn them but my friend has never been a member of a club and only know the rules that people like me tell him and maybe he thought I was trying to pull a fast one.
I never lie in golf as your just lying to yourself so it got to me that he thought I would do this.

Oh and I won the next hole along with the £50 :)
