Ball hits ball on fairway ruling please

Playing 2nd shot on par 5 hitting 3 wood - ball travels approximately 200 yards and hits FC's ball laying on the fairway who had already played, deflecting both in opposite directions. Now i know if this happened on the green we would have to replace FC's ball to a spot as close to it's original spot as possible (and play mine as it lies) but does the same apply with two balls coming into contact on the fairway?

Thanks for the quick reply and if the ball was not replaced, is the penalty with that player for playing a ball from the wrong position? i.e the penalty would not be with me even though I (my ball) caused his ball to move.

If you weren’t able to establish the exact spot on which to replace, you would drop.

If a player did not replace or drop as near as possible to where the moved ball was thought to have been, he would indeed be liable to a 2 stroke penalty.

If the player whose ball was moved fails to replace the ball, he incurs a one-stroke penalty.

Oh disagreement in the ranks - one or two strokes? drama!

Defintely 2

No drama - my mistake - no excuse.

So what happens if the collision happens over a hump in the fairway and is not seen by either player or any witnesses? How would you know it had even happened and how could you then penalize the player? :mmm:

FFS delc, if nobody saw it then why would you being having that discussion?

there wouldn't be a debate because nobody would know!

Decision 18-5/3

If no one knows about it then there's no penalty (as per the note to 18-1)

If you find out after completing the hole then there's no penalty

If you find out while playing the hole then you go back and play the ball from where it originally lay without penalty.

If two balls collide on a fairway and nobody is around, do they make a sound?

THAT'S the question we should be asking Delc

He would tell you it depends on the balls...

I believe that in such a situation the ball's will apologise to each other in an Irish accent - but it's impossible to prove either way :)
