Is it just me or is it the conditions? I guess we all see a reduction in distance during the winter with the cold and damp atmosphere, but yesterday and today i seem to be almost 2 clubs down on the norm. The temp was about 5 deg and damp but constantly kept coming up short even when I thought I had really flushed it.....

We've had a lot of rain and playing at Epsom last week I noticed the ball wasn't going anywhere near as far. I was hitting at least one more club than normal and taking the back reading of the green as the ball was stopping where it pitched on greens. Got caught out on the first couple.

Ditto and my key winter golf thought is to take the yardage to the back of the green and enough club for that - unless it's v windy!

That is a novelty item at Epsom, normally struggle to keep the ball on them they're that quick.

The air has dramatically reduced in temp hence the ball will travel a lot less

So many things change in winter. Can feel like a different game. Some people excel, others really struggle. Makes me wonder why people aren't happy about the lack handicap qualifying comps at there clubs. Its not the conditions that your handicap is built on.

Played 9 holes this afternoon, ball still carrying summer distances for me, was surprised how far it was flying tbh. Never been convinced I lose much carry in winter from the temperatures, obviously no run and higher winds have an impact though

Differing answers, interesting..... Perhaps it's just down to me being a bit tired, i'll hope for better Saturday :)

That's because you have a nice swing, and you mash the ball. Us mere mortals struggle a bit.

Distances are definitely down. I was trying out a new GPS app on my phone and getting distances for my shots, and the number I had where I thought "I've nailed that" only to find my 3 wood carried barely 200 yards and the ball was a foot away from a pitch mark that seemed to be laughing at me. Lack of carry and no rollout was taking a good 10-20% off my distances.

On the plus side, hitting greens was easier. Just take a club that carries the distance and let the soft greens hold the ball every time.

Mine is going nowhere... it's been where I left it for 6 weeks!

Although because it's been in the car I've actually driven it 672 miles in that time :p
