Today my pp played a tee shot where the ball fell of the tee as he was into his down swing. He somehow adjusted and hit the ball, albeit not very well. The ball flew about 150 yds down the right hand side of the fairway.
i don’t know the rule in this case ( we were playing match play) but we considered that it was in play and carried on. He hit a moving ball. Sounds wrong. But what were his options please?

The ball was in play from where it finished. No penalty for hitting a moving ball as the ball is not in play until it is hit off the tee.

For reference Rule 6.2

(5) Ball Is Not in Play Until Stroke Is Made.

the player makes a stroke at that ball while it is falling or after it has fallen off, there is no penalty, the stroke counts and the ball is in play.

His only option would have been to pull out of the swing - this normally leads to many weeks in traction due to the straining of muscles, tendons and ligaments...

That would have been disastrous for him as he does suffer greatly from spine issues. Thanks to all for the answer.

Only for you guys that swing all out!
We experienced guys, used to all sorts of aches/pains anyway, have no such problem - mainly 'cos we don't swing fast enough to cause any damage to our, already decrepid, bodies in the first place.
Mind you, we generally hit the fairway, unlike some! ;)

One thing to add.
If the ball falls off the tee and is missed or if it hit but does not leave the teeing area the stroke still counts but the player may replace the ball on the tee before making their next stroke and move the tee and ball to a different location in the teeing area if they wish, without additional penalty.

Sorry to re-bump an old post lol

I understand if you make a stroke from the tee and your ball falls off or you touch it slightly you get to re-tee it if its within the teeing area... so if ypu make a tee shot and your ball hits an object and rebounds back and comes to rest within the teeing area do you still have the option to tee it up?

Yes

6.2 Playing Ball from Teeing Area
a. When Teeing Area Rules Apply

The teeing area Rules in Rule 6.2b apply whenever a player is required or allowed to play a ball from the teeing area. This includes when:
This Rule applies only to the teeing area the player must play from in starting the hole he or she is playing, not to any other teeing locations on the course (whether on the same hole or a different hole).

Thank you for quick reply..
Did look in rules but only says if you make a stroke and you whiff the ball and it stays in the tee area you can re-tee but couldn't see anything that mentions ball leaving the tee area and finishing back in it from your 1st stroke having that option to re-tee. ?

Where does it say 'if it stays in the teeing area' ?
As you can see the Rule only requires that the ball is in the teeing area after a stroke (the underlined words). It doesn't matter where it went between times.

PS. Were you looking at the pre 2019 Rules?
