This for me is when you walk off a par 4/5 hole with a par after hitting a brilliant tee shot then a load of rubbish before closing out with a chip in or monster putt. How do you feel after one?

Had one on Saturday. Short par 4 dogleg right with a big bunker on the corner. I hit the tee shot exactly as I'd planned (faded round the corner -Bob you'd have been proud - and over the bunker) Left myself a 50 yard pitch. Duffed that one and then hit the next one much too hard and off to the back of the green. Long putt, right to left and downhill. Curled it in deadweight.

Walked off the hole confused. Elated with the putt and score but perplexed by my duffed pitch and thinned chip. At the end of the day a par is a par but I still find a s**t shot sandwich leaves a nasty aftertaste. How do you feel after one?

I'm going to vote for relieved...

Take the positives.
A good putt - ok with a slice of luck - will make you putt with more confidence. A bit more luck and you'll hole a load more. That's where a good score come from.

Luck? Luck! LUCK! No luck my friend. Pure unadulterated skill, flamboyance, natural flat stick ability. Not even a soupçon of good fortune on the beautifully read, weighted and executed putt. Luck...pah! ;)

It says here................. :D :D :D :D :D

Oh Bob in reply to your post on the deleted 'echo' thread yes the pitching needs work. Don't tend to leave myself those types of shots at my course so it's the type of issue that rears it's ugly head when I travel and get my course management wrong! That said guess what I'm practicing on Thursday ;)

Take the positives out of the hole, you hit a good drive and nailed a long tricky putt.

Taking those thoughts onto the next tee can only promote confidence and help with your game whereas beating yourself up for the 2 bad shots is pointless as they are gone, nothing you can do to change it and thinking too much about them will only diminish your confidence gained from the great putt

Smange 100% agree with you. I didn't and scored double, triple on the next two holes, so definitely learnt a lesson from that.

Was just curious as to how others would feel in the same situation. Unsurprising that a low handicap like JD would see it as a shot dropped...

I'm already trying to forget the first three shots until I reach the clubhouse. (When I have to completely beat myself up)

The next one is more important than any of the previous four, though I'll allow myself to be pleased until the next tee.

No such thing as a lucky putt, your aiming for the hole aren't you?

I was once taught to aim to hole everything on or around the green, since adopting that mindset I've holed a hell of a lot more long putts and chips.

I'd be dissapointed in my play not the score, if you swing well and connect well the score will come.

Just saving a par is ok, but if swinging badly it will happen again and again in the round and you cant keep relying on monster putts to save the day.

I would be pleased with making par, but annoyed as I would know that it could have been a lot better

As DV said id be disapointed with the shots, ok youd have a par but how many monster putts can you possibly make ?? 4 steady shots better than 1 great 2 crap & 1 lucky one .. ok you say its still a par but you would be better off long term having a steady game than up & down one like that .. a bad swing will find you out eventualy .. and youl never improve with a bad swing & a couple of long putts .. as for no pictures on the score card ,, youl know you were lucky , be honest with yourself about your own game if you wana improve .

Take it as it happens mate. 2nd at my course on Sunday hit a low drive that hit the ladies tee marker and shot behind us 20 yards. Shrugged, giggled and though well par's out of the window. Cue a 7 iron out of the smeg then 5 wood around the trees and onto the green and long putt holed. Par done!

Did it screw me up? I couldn't drive of the tee for the next couple of holes as I kept looking at the tee markers, plus my partners were standing like slips in cricket! :D

Still walked away with 37 points so very happy with that!

If I hit every shot as I intended, I'd be on telly, but I am not, and I have a handicap that suggests I'm going to truly mess up at least 9 shots a round.

There is never anything wrong with a par.
