Tell us about those moments of pure bad luck you've suffered while playing golf.....

Yesterday I hit the marker post in the middle of the fairway. 200ish yards away, one bounce and hit it dead centre; ball bounced backwards ten yards instead of running 20-30 yards past! Effectively prevented me reaching the green with the second shot.

I've bounced off a couple of sprinkler heads but that's about it. I've had a lot more good breaks than bad in my time though.

On the 16th yesterday, friendly round with a good mate. Two down, but I'd won the last two and he was rocking. Hit a decentish drive that ended up right side of fairway but under a tree. he smacks his drive left into trees, almost certainly lost. i think great, this holes mine. He finds his ball and hacks out. No problem I think, just keep it low and run it up the fairway, chip on and putt or two for an easy win (I know how bad he is at putting). So really hood down with my hybrid, swing, and yep, catch it absolutely perfect. It goes up like the bloody space shuttle, pinballs around in the branches a bit before popping out backwards and ending up 30 yds further back than when I started. Once the laughing had subsided I lost the hole and the match:angry:

Bad breaks, good breaks, we have them all. IMO you tend to think about the bad breaks more as they cost you shots, so you feel you get more bad luck than good.

I've hit horrific drives that have hit a tree and ended up back on the fairway, I've hit drives that have been going down the middle and take a bad bounce and end up in the rough behind a tree. Sometimes luck is on your side with this game, but I do believe that any good round will always have some good luck in there.

Many years ago I played in a 36 hole scratch event. Level par after a blustery first round, and feeling good for the afternoon. On the 4th hole my ball ran 6 inches off the fairway into a deep divot hole in the rough, a double bogey ensued. A few holes later the ball ricocheted off the flag into a bunker, and another bogey. On the 16th hole the ball found a divot hole in the fairway made by someone who was obviously playing a different hole - it ran at 45* to the direction of the fairway, and another bogey. A 4 over second round, and I finished 1 shot off the lead.

Not that its scared into my memory banks.

Whilst playing at Dewstow. Not my picture but 'nuff said I think!

Loads......... but yesterday, playing our first winter league knockout stage was a fresh one. We'd just got the game back level with one to play. Teeing off on 18, it's a fairly narrow 100 yd tree lined chute before it starts opening out to fairway, with a 10- 20 foot drop into trees and leaves all down the right side to the green. Trying not to power fade right, I straight hooked left, it cannoned off two trees before ricocheting straight back right across the gap and down the drop. I found the ball nestling quite happily in the V of a fallen branch. Unable to move said branch, i took my 7 iron and made much better contact than I could have imagined, flew straight of the branch at aimed gap between the trees, only to clip an overhanging branch at the edge of the fairway, falling back down the drop 10 yds in front of me. Needless to say, our opponents were long down the centre for one and I was out of the hole. Fortunately, my partner managed to scrape a half on the hole and we went on to win on the 20th. :-)

My attempt to get on the 18th green at Blackmoor at the H4H meet has become legendary.
Pushed my approach right into heather and behind a tree.
Its deep...!!!
There's a bunker in front just out of the heather and I reckon to make that will be a good outcome.
Out comes the SW and I just swing and swing hard.
I don't think I touched any heather on the way down and the ball didn't touch any on the way out - it flew...and flew...
Started rattling around the patio, missed Go-Kart Sandy by inches, went the full width of the patio before falling down a drain......when by rights it shouldn't have gone more than 10 yards..
Quality shot - just when I didn't need it....

i don't worry about it most of the time, you get good breaks as well and no one complains about those;)

Indeed, this isn't a moaning thread it's for a laugh. I was almost doubled up with laughter when I hit that marker (bounce game, would have been less impressed in something that mattered!).

A guy I played with yesterday nearly holed out from 100 yards for eagle on a par 5. Bounced on the front of the green, rolled up to the hole and hit the pin. Ended up about 2 foot away, then he 3 putted. Win some, you lose some.

I know, i hit a sign that was in the middle of the fairway in the first medal of the year. I was left out my the green keepers, it said no play from this area unless on a mat. best drive i hit that day as well, made an almighty clang.

on the same hole my PP hit a green hoop that stops you walking too close to a bunker that had just been repaired, he#d just got relief as the bunker was GUR, then thinned it into this hoop, the ball shot off straight right into the deepest rough on the course never to be seen again. he still moans about this hoop and his bad luck, but never mentions the luck he got going in one of the hardest bunkers on the course and getting a free drop out though;)

A few years ago I miss hit my driver on the 2nd hole hit the yellow tee markers and rebounded back at a fair rate just between my playing partners gentleman's area :o just missing him and the ball ended up over 90 yards back on the 9th tee.

Good news was that I was still in play and just turned a long par 4 into an even longer now unreachable par 4. Oh and it was a medal as well just to top it off.

I didn't hear about it too much in the bar afterwards :)

Yeah that's exactly the sort of thing that people forget instantly rather than cast it up for the rest of your golfing life! :D

I get reminded everytime I get drawn with the lad who I nearly wiped out that I nearly prevented him from becoming a father. He tells everyone to stand well clear when I have a driver in my hands, the git :D

Haha, that's harsh that is. It reminds me of a junior open I played at Lutterworth about 15 years ago and there was a lad I knew playing the 18th just as I was practising on the putting green some 100 yards behind the last green and in front of the clubhouse. He preceded to thin the kegs off a 9 iron it smacked the clubhouse window, ricocheted back, just missed my head and then hit a concrete path and took a huge bounce back towards the 18th green where it finished some 20 feet from the hole, which he holed for birdie. I've never seen anything like it still to this day.

Almost the same happened to me only my ball went OB much to the amusement of my sadistic FCs.
