My new driver and wedges savings have just been wiped out. I had been puting away any over time lately in order to treat myself to a couple of new toys for the comming season and had a nice wee sum saved.

Sadly the washing machine has decided to die this week and with a toddler and an even messier dad in the house a new machine is the priority. Looks like I'll be volunteering for more overtime between now and Christmas. Thankfully the course is still ice bound!

Life is bloomin great!

Still at least I know Santa has got me a Sabertooth!

Before you condemn your machine , check out ukwhitegoods.co.uk. Soemtimes it can be simple fixes to get your appliance up and running again.

If its a Bosch/Neff/Siemens washing machine , ask me !!!

Anything to protect your Driver/Wedge savings

Damn!

We thought we were looking at a new machine a couple of weeks ago as it had gone into some weird random-activity mode and wasnt draining.

Decided to do a bit of an investigation and stripped her down. Turns out one of the small persons minute hair-clips had got stuck in the pump, whipped it out of the pump, switched it off for 1/2 hour, back on and now as good as new.

Glad it was only that as these days any domestic appliance or electric gadget seem to be throw-away units where repair cost always exceed replacement costs.

I know where you're coming from. Ours is dying - the engineer reckoned something like £300 to replace everything that needs it so we've got a new one on the way - its lasted 12 years so it doesn't owe us anything. Still, there go the funds for the Skycaddie I was going to treat myself to.

It really does piss me off that nothing is actually essentially repairable these days.

My dad us an electrical and mechanical engineer and there are many things that even he cant fix because as soon as replacement parts are required, the cost becomes untenable.

Its just another rip-off.

I remember my nans telly, a baird thing, lasted 27 years. She bought a samsung from comets and after 2 years it was knackered.

Im sure they make things that dont last long nowadays just to cash in more.

To be fair, our current machine is now 9 years old so I cant really complain especially when I'm told that they now have a 5 year life span! WTF

Just bought one from tesco online, broke my heart.

The best ones out there are Bosch, bit pricey but last!

Some of the other stuff is just CRAP! We used to have abosch that lasted god knows how many yrs and we decided to replace it, it wasnt broken, just tired. We decdided to try others. We went through 4 makers in 2 yrs, two of which clapped out in a few weeks, one the next day and the longest lasting one lasted only a year or so.

Threatened to kill everyone on earth who had anything to do with crap washers then went back to bosch. Had this one for 2yrs doing washes every day no probs.I hope it lasts as long as the old one.My sister has one that is 10yrs old and never had a prob.

We had a hoover machine that lasted about 6 years and HID religiously used Calgon in every wash as we are in a notorious hard water area. In the end it was the computer board that went which would have cost too much to repair and the engineer said it was more effective to buy a new one.

We have an Ariston that has been pefectly reliable. We were told by the Hoover engineer that most machines are only expected to last a maximum of 5 years (3-4 in hard water zones). We actually got ours based on a Which survey at the time (HID subscribes to their magazine) and our current one was good on reliability and energy efficiency.

I'd try and see if you can't get it repaired before forking out. Have a look in Thomsons as there are a number of old fashioned repairmen who look at TV's washing machines etc, and who don't charge the earth and so you may get it sorted cheaply enough to still get some new toys
