Living near to Cambridge, we have average speed cameras on certain sections of the A14.

Thing is, I know I've averaged more than 80 through certain parts and often see people travelling through them a lot quicker than that.

So do people think they are actually connected to anything or just there for show?

You might have got away with a non-functioning one.

From my observations they are the most effective way to control speed around road works. And when there's a work-force involved, that certainly helps their safety.

Doing almost twice the 'limit' through such areas strikes me as irresponsible!

SPECS cameras certainly do work and prosecutions do happen. Roadangel states that Nottinghamshire has the highest number of fixed pairs.

What was the limit?was it 70?

Taking in to consideration speedo error etc you may have only averaged a small amount above 70 and given their tolerances it may not have been enough to follow up.

Trucks from Eastern Europe seem to totally ignore them. Are they imune or do they know something we dont?

They're pretty much immune as they know it cost so much more to prosecute them than the cost of the fine so the police don't bother. They don't really bother with limiters either when they get over here. When I was driving long distance on more than one occasion I would be on the motorway and have a foreign truck go past me like I was standing still.
Average speed cameras do work too as I know a few people that have been caught on them.

I got done on the M62 a couple of years back. Average speed cameras, Saturday morning, 7 am, no workforce and all lanes open ...

They said I averaged 59 through it (50 limit) but I was able to go on a 'Speed Awareness' course instead of taking the points.

Long story short, they work.

The A77 between Kilmarnock and Girvan used to be carnage alley with up to 10 deaths a year.
ASC have been up for about 10 years now [they were the first in the UK] and the death toll is now thankfully very low.
In this sense they work very well.
