I don't think average putts on its own is a particularly useful stat to refer to IMHO. You could be averaging 18 putts, which you think makes you awesome, but it's because you are always chipping on from just off the green with your 3rd or 4th shot. Likewise, you could be 54 putts average, but that's because you are hitting every single GIR and 3 putting.

Average putts per GIR is fairly useful. Other than that, I would simply aim for trying to get to be less than 36 and as close to 30 or just under on a good day.

There was this stats though:

According to statistics gathered from TOURCaddie's user database, the averageamateur golfer (10-19 handicap range) requires 1.72 putts per hole. That's approximately 31 strokes per round, which equates to roughly 30-40 percent of most golfers' scores

So if your handicap is more than 19, you're probably putting about as well as expected.

For a much better measure as an amateur, just add up the total of the final putt distance for each hole.

Forget everyone else, just try and increase this month on month.

Most people would be surprised at just how low this is in practice.

That's brings on my next question. What my average GIR should be
Not sure how many rounds you've logged on Game Golf, but it gives you all this and you can also compare yourself to a scratch golfer and see any weakness's in your game, for me off 13 I compare myself to a 10 and 5 Handicapper for me my Driving and Putting isn't bad but my long irons and short game are my biggest weakness, losing a lot strokes in those areas. It's under insights.

I was thinking of doing that but came to the conclusion that two long putts a round could massively skew the results.

For many, anything over 3ft would massively skew the results!

In practice it skews nothing over the long term because you never have the same opportunities round on round. You could have 18 putts total for 18ft, equally you could have 36 putts for the same when putting dead from the furthest point on every green.

However, over time it will give you a reasonable indication of whether you are improving your putting.

Its difficult to really conclusively measure anything because it depends on GIR, what distance the first putt was from etc.

From a not very detailed/high quality set of data (whenever I'm actually bothered to put my cards into golfshot) I'm at 1,77 putts per green and 1,99 per GIR and consider myself very good with the putter compared to other upper Cat 2 players if that helps you at all
