Me and HiD just broken out the box set of the original series for first time in 3 years.

For me the best TV comedy drama series ever bar none.

Clement and La Frenais are simply geniuses.

Totally agree. Have watched it many times. Top comedy drama, and perfectly cast.

Fantastic series! I don't count the newer ones that were made after series 2 they were terrible but the original 2 series were brilliant!

Characters that you actually really warmed towards

Absolutely cracking series, timed fairly well as a couple of 'proper Geordies' had been at our work for a couple of years and a tennis pal (female) had married a semi-pro footballing one. In fact, the team he was playing for at the time (Watersiders) was comprised of 10 Geordies/Tynesiders and a Scot - the Keeper! They played in Newcastle colours too!

Oz's tantrum after coming back through Customs and his subtle dismantling of a benchtop were rather memorable!

Before my time too. Heard its good though.

What you've heard is correct. It's very good and series 1&2 are pretty timeless.

Get yourself onto Amazon or similar, acquire the box set and marvel at what old people used to watch on TV in the late 80s and early 90s.

His subtle dismantling of Big Baz was funnier. "He'll give ya nae more bother"
"He wasn't going to man, he was only going for a chicken tikka!"
"I'll just go wait in the car"

Classic!

Another one from back then was an Alan Bleasdale play called The Black Stuff, which spawned a series called Boys from the Black stuff. The original play was excellent, as was most of the series apart from some very dark moments - "gizza job. I can do that, gizza job." I think Yosser Hughes went mad and committed suicide. Yosser is probably better known as the King(?) of Rohan in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
