Watching a bit of the England v South Africa test earlier today & at the drinks break David Gower pops up to apologise profusely for an obscenity apparently picked up by the stump mike. Is anyone actually that bothered about this? It seems like even more political correctness in the modern age.

The one I find most laughable is when they do it during the boxing, when they stuff a camera in the face of the trainers during the break and then appear surprised when the language is a little industrial. The viewing public has tuned in to watch two blokes leather the hell out of each other; do you really expect them to be offended by the odd swear word?

my opinion....
..who gives a monkeys (Mod Edit)...what do they expect when they stick a mic in the middle of the pitch .too right there will be swearing .cant say i was ever hurt by somebody swearing at me.

i agree, too many people are easily offended. Just look at this forum for example

It's funny when listening to the wireless when we're away at teams like Spurs,Chelsea etc where the commentary positions are in and around the fans in the stands.

Was watching the cricket not sure which day but they were looking at some of the photographers working at the game. One of them gave a v sign to the tv camera

Not even any sort of apology. I was terribly offended as im not one for obscenities at all.

Thats right mate, I've only seen you swear when your close to helicopters.;)

Strange phenomenom.:)

By all means give your opinions . but any examples of swearing even if hidden by asterisks, will be jumped upon

C'mon guys you know the score

Just plain daft to make too big a thing about it as it is fairly rare.

Obviously the complainers ain't watched a mainstream film recently.

Said it before and I'll say it again but there are words that kids of 9 or 10 know and use that get censored on here. Not 100% sure who the censorship is there to protect, especially when you can see much worse in The Times, other golf mags, in fact most publications nowadays. And that's before you look at what young people are actually exposed to and see on the internet nowadays.

No one wants profanity filled posts and casual swearing by posters who do not have the intelligence or command of the English language to not swear, but personally I think a well chosen swear word is a beautiful thing, see Malcolm Tucker for some examples. But then again the rules are the rules and if nothing else golfers love rules and codes, so there you go. You just abide by them.

As for who get offended by swearing in live sport then the professionally offended? But I suppose if it is just on normal TV during the day and very young kids could be watching then the broadcaster has to apologise.

Hear what you say, but the forum rules are there to protect the commercial image of the Golf Monthly brand, this forum is Mikes train set , he makes the rules, end of.

General rule of thumb. If a particular word wouldn't normally be seen in the magazine, then it shouldn't be seen on the Forum.

Now can we stop criticising the forum rules, they are what they are.

Back to the discussion ...........

Is shanker acceptable ?

I don't know why the commentators apologise. Just draws attention to the obscenity. I do like listening to the keepers on the stump mike. AB speaks in Afrikaans though which is not playing the game.:ooo:

We have the radio on in the office and I have to laugh every now and then when they play Noah and the Whale's L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N as they're singing about a girl who freely gives oral pleasure, but of course being commercial radio they edit it so we get "she goes <<silence>> on anyone". Got to say anyone likely to be offended by that and anyone whose innocence they're trying to "protect" probably wouldn't pick up on it anyway, so all they're doing is drawing attention to the fact that something is said that needs censorship!

I know I'm old,and old fashioned, but I have never used so much as the f word indoors in over 40 years of marriage. I can't censor the tv and films that we watch but it's refreshing, as far as I'm concerned, that the forum has standards

You used it plenty of times outdoors on our 10th, and if I remember rightly every time you spoke to Phil on the following eight holes.:mmm:
