Looking for advice if anyone has an Audi and bought a second hand satnav SD card.

It was about £500 for satnav as an optional extra so wasn't paying that, but was just looking on eBay for an SD card for music and there were a lot of satnav SD cards for sale at £50ish.

Does anyone know if I could just buy a used one, plug it in and then have satnav on the inbuilt screen?

Thanks for any help.

Not sure about Audi but if its like Mercedes then its an actual unit that gets plugged in and a card in to that. I have Becker MapPilot on my A Class and its a small box that plugs into a preinstalled slot in the glove box. I can get different map cards for it.

Wouldnt think it would be that much different although stand to be correcred, forum resident experts will be along at some point to clarify.

There's two SD slots in the glove box which I think you just use one for the satnav and one for media.

Will have a search around on the forum posted, the one I found didn't seem very active and couldn't see anything on search.

Wasnt sure about Audi. From a quick search I think there might be a specific head unit that gives the sst nav when used with a card. I somehow cant see an SD card being a £500 optional. Becker was only £400 on my Merc but that is a specific unit as all the head units are the same from A180 to A250.

Makes sense, especially when they can be bought so cheap second hand. Will try and see if I can find something on what the unit looks like and see if it is an additional part rather than just an SD insert.

Question seems to have been asked a few times on various forums but no replies. More replies on here than a specialist Audi forum!

Finally found an active Audi forum. Looks like if you buy a second hand SD card you still need to get it activated which Audi charge £168 for.

Think I'll stick with Google maps on my phone for now.

Cheers for the help though.

Hi, I got a new Audi recently and much as you did, did not go for the Sat Nav option as it was too pricey bearing in mind I already have a Tom Tom and don't really go to many new places where I need a sat nav.

I have also seen the SD cards on ebay, and you can get some more disreputable garages to activate it for you on the cheap as well. But as mine is a company car I can't do that as I will no doubt be invalidating all kinds of warantees and the such like. And to be honest I use both my SD slots for music and podcasts, so don't really want a sat nav SD card in there.

I've got a company Audi, and to have the SD card supplied and fitted it was an additional 500 notes.

When I enquired about getting one independently it was made clear to me that fitting it myself would invalidate lots of warranties, which wasn't worth the risk TBH.

Currently using NavFree on my iPad

Yes Audi seems to have all this stuff tied up pretty tight. I have a 2008 satnav in my A4 which loads off a DVD and would love to get updated maps but the cost is silly money at a main dealer and if you buy a disk online you need to get it 'activated' for £150 notes or so. If they made it a reasonable £30 they would coin it in.

That sounds reasonable Ian, but why do that when they can try to sell you new 40K car instead lol
