So after a decade of entering the ballot i got lucky this year with some practice round tickets, which just arrived in the mail yesterday.

1) can anyone recommend a place to stay? Ive heard Augusta itself is pretty rough in places so you have to be careful.

2) if it becomes too expensive/difficult for me to get there can i give my tickets to others or would they have to pretend they are me?

Thanks.

I would imagine that hotel prices in town will go through the roof in Masters week. Thinking outside the box, it is a 2hr drive from Atlanta. Hotels will be much cheaper there and if you are staying long enough to squeeze in some golf the courses are excellent and cheap. PM me if you want any more info on the area, I've been there a few times.

A guy I know who was previously a member of our club suddenly started exhibiting evidence of unexplained wealth. Last year he took himself & nine mates for the entire Masters, plus some golf on the side, by private jet. He may know somewhere reasonable to stay. I'll ask him, if you like.

Iv been, hotels in Augusta are very expensive during masters week and there aren't that many of them. I stayed here

It's about an hours drive from Augusta, it sits right next to the freeway so within 2 mins of leaving the hotel you are on the freeway, cruise down for 45 mins then you enter a contraflow lane designated specifically for the masters, this takes you right to the car park at Augusta. A very easy drive.
It's very reasonably priced aswell. There's a few places to eat nearby, it sits on the edge of town. a restaurant within walking distance that's reasonable.
Send me a PM if you want anymore info on anything.

Try using one of the generic hotel booking sites and look for somewhere in Columbia, South Carolina. It is approx 1hr drive to Augusta.

Thanks very much for the thoughts everyone. Ive ruled Augusta itself out (£750/night for the holiday inn!!) and other places are looking crazily expensive too. Am still investigating options but might have to leave it for another year.

How much are you looking to pay for a hotel room? You've spent 10 years applying for tickets and your not willing to pay £75 a night for a hotel??
The link I sent you to the one I stayed in is only 185 dollars for a 2 queen bed room for 2 nights. That's only about £75 a night, if there's 2 of you going its half that, Buttons really.

Where did you fly into for that hotel? From the link it looked like the hotel was in lexington.

It is in Lexington, an hour from Augusta. You just need to work out if you would rather drive for an hour or spend huge amounts on a hotel nearer the course.
I flew to Atlanta and then drove to the hotel, it suited me as when the masters was finished I was driving out to myrtle beach.
There's an airport in Columbia very close to that hotel, it wasn't a viable option for me but it might be for you.
