At what point does all the gear and no idea become defunct?

I think it is after you have played golf for 25 years. You wake up one morning and realise that trying to buy a secret weapon to unlock the mysteries of golf is utterly futile.

I find the concept tricky when it comes to golf. When I did triathlon it was full of those with full carbon this and that and full lycra this and that and silly woody woodpecker speed aero helmet thingies being overtaken but someone on a Raleigh Shopper. It was all very visible though whereas at golf it's more subtle as it's like looking in someone's shopping trolley and judging them on the contents !

First time I saw a white driver I thought "anyone wielding that better know how to wield it properly" and I guess they still look a bit showy but overall I think anyone striving to do their best at this damned difficult but beautiful game is entitled to have the gear that helps them maximise their ability...

When you couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks.

If you want all the best stuff and can afford it then why not buy it?
If you don't want it, or can't afford it then don't buy it.

There will always be something nice, new and shiny to buy and all of us will want something new at some point no matter how good we are.

But when you turn up looking like a tour pro, all matching gear, matching bag, clothing, shoes, brolley, glove, hat, etc, sunnies on, in the rain, and then shank it off the first, you have to expect some flack.

couldn't agree more!

As a man who used Howson Derby irons until I was off 15 and now use good equipment now I'm able to buy it, and play off a decent handicap, it has never really affected me.

But if the flack doesn't bother you go for it. If it does bother you don't buy it.

Amanda says about less good players with white drivers:
my pro was telling me about an older fella he fitted for a driver.
28 handicap, big slice etc was fitted for the R11 and it helped no end with all the available adjustments/options. He said that's great but can you get me one in black as I couldn't turn up at the wednesday seniors comp with a white driver and then knob it 50yds.

I think that's a real shame.

I have no problem with people buying all the expensive gear they like, if they can afford it and it makes them happy.

I also have no problem others taking the mick out of said people, As long as they are funny, and don't just come across as chippy.

I have no problem with anyone going out and buying all the latest kit but do look on them as drug addicts, life can be good without the "fix" but they just cant help themselves.

Personaly it doesnt bother me as to what gear people use or what relation it has to their ability .. my bug bear is a hacker (judged by ability not handicap) ramming advice down peoples ears

In answer to the OP question , hard to know the exact point so il say single figures ..

Anyone loaded up with new equipment is alright by me.. if they can wield them well enough to be 18 h/cap or less then that's fair enough in my book.

Well someone thinking a white headed club is flash and a high handicapper would look silly with one rules out buying any TM gear in the near future. Whats the difference between a R11 and a Titelist 910D2? Just ones white ones black, both are still top end drivers. My football boots are green but im not as good as Rooney....
