i am considering joining ashford manor golf club wich has reduced its joing fee from 1200 to 600.
still a large outlay i have played the course it is not spectacular but fair.
but i have heard some of the members are a bit crusty and not very welcoming as i will be joining the club alone i am a bit concerned it could be a exspensive mistake.
has anyone here had any experinces with the club.

Hi

Played Ashford a few times, nice course not very long, but I did get the feeling it was a bit crusty as you say. Most clubs are waving their joining fees at the moment, so 600 sounds steap

How much a year do they want?

And where do you live?

i live in ashford !
there is only a 7 day membership avalible at 1500 + per year.
this is why i am dithering about joining.

I'd have a look around before you commit. There are loads of courses round your area and they will all bite your hand off to get your membership.

Ask to have a look round the facilities and play a round on each course before you commit to any mebership. You will get a good idea of what other members and the staff are like. Also ask them about how many comps they run each month, do they have a roll up system at the weekends, which is the best way to meet other members

I think a lot of clubs will also give you free membership until March at this time of year, which is also worth asking about

Good luck

I've played at Ashford a few times. Quite an expensive course, but good greens and local. I asked about membership, but was told that until my handicap came down to twenty four my enquiry would only 'be held on file'. This was on the basis that 'tight drives and fast greens would be really dis-spiriting if you handicap was higher than twenty four'.
Having played there I didn't have these dis-spiriting issues, but they didn't want my money anyway. Though the Secretary was trying to sweeten the pill their concern for my mental well being did surprise me.
Needless to say I probably won't bother to enquire again once I do become eligible.

Played there a very long time ago in a society and din't enjoy the reception we got from the staff or members one bit. We were viewed with disdain throughout the day and service was bordering on hostile and staff were trying to clear down the tables as the prizes were given out. Wouldn't go back and certainly wouldn't want to be a member there on the basis of that

Played it a few times and did seem to be very crusty for the course quality! Typical time-warp club imo!

Afraid you are likely to have to wait a few years until several of the Old Farts that allow it to stay 'out-of-date' cark it before the No Joining Fee sense arrives - by which time the club coul be in trouble!

Not a great many good quality courses quite as handy I expect, so that;s why they can hold out with those prices. How far are you prepared to travel?

I grew up round the corner from there and know a couple of members and have played there a few times. They certainly have their element of unwelcoming members but they aren't all bad, I guess you just have to find the right ones.
