Ryder Cup Winner
Well that didn't o according to plan! Not that I had a plan.
I played in the Ascot stakes yesterday, 36 holes, pretty much as it turned out without a break and my seemingly recent spell of ruing good golf with treble bogeys continued.
The first round started well enough, hit a great drive and was 20ft left of the par 5 pin in 3. Then 3-stabbed. What happened over the next 5 holes was a systematic failure of every part of my game. First my putting, then my short game and then more alarmingly my driving and as a result I found myself 8 over after 6 holes but managed to sort myself out and finished on +13 which as it turned out was pretty respectable. I'm not sure what was going on but the group in front of us were painfully slow which lead to a lot of sitting, and I mean sitting, in the fairway or on the tee waiting for them to clear which meant we had about 25 minutes to get back out after finishing round one.
I was determined to score better on the second round and started well enough but as has been the story of my golf recently I managed to add a quad, and 2 trebles to 4 pars and 2 bogeys to be standing on the 10th tee (actually the 1st as we started on 10) at +12. It was getting tough by then, the best part of 7 hours in the sun and nothing to play for I was starting to lose interest but decided the best thing to do was set myself a target of finishing no worse than the morning effort of +13. The pleasing thing was that but for a double on the last following another wayward drive I would have done just that.
The two other guys in my group, a Mill Ride junior off 7 and a fellow visitor were great company, but faired worse than me on both rounds. The course was in good nick, brown in places but that's to be expected and the greens were excellent.
All in all it was a good day and despite my score and another couple of 0.1s I come away feeling like I've played a lot more good golf than bad and while my h'cap is up to 7.0, I still think another cut is not far away.
