what happened

He couldn't mark his ball behind as it would have been on his pp's marker so marked his ball to the side then moved it a putter length to the side also to get off his line. Then returned his marker the putter length back but looked to place the ball in front of the marker and not to the side.

probably out of habit.

Absolutely.

I have a method for helping me remember.

If I ever have to mark the ball in an abnormal way I hold my putter by the head end instead of the handle, as I have usually moved it by a head length anyway.

Just a helpful reminder to replace it in a very different way to normal.

No penalty either???????? The referee even stated that the ball was not replaced in the same spot. Have the rules changed since the Lexi Thompson incident (serious question)?

no they havent, the difference the ref claimed was there was an intervening act in between (the marking a clubhead to the side) which gave him a margin of error

Andy McFee says that he doesn't believe the ball was replaced in the correct spot........
So how is that not a penalty?
Why do we have to make some rules so difficult.......

It would (obv) be impossible to replace the ball in exactly the same spot. Rules official said the error was within margin of error given the circumstances.

Yeah, heard him say that....
So he marks to the side then replaces in front - depending on how big his ball marker is that could be nearly an inch different....how big is this margin?
Do we now have an inch "grace" distance in which to replace our ball..?😟

Exactly, he marked to the side, then replaced in front. I can't see how it's not a penalty.

Lucky he won by a huge margin as if it have been by 1 shot, the guy in 2nd would be quite rightly peeved imo.

Your wrong, read my comments in the other thread.

Could he have marked his ball behind with his marker on top of his pp's and then moved it to the side by one or two putter head lengths? Is that allowed?

For my tuppence worth, if it's been scrutinised by TV and the chief referee is happy Rahm hasn't deliberately cheated and marked it in a manner he(Rahm) assumed was back in the right place, then what is the problem. I think golf has suffered another negative rules press this year already and good to see a degree of common sense applied
