I am shocked! Accidentally flipped onto Sky Sports Football and found that this actually exists! Basically it's people playing FIFA on a games console with a couple of guys commentating as though it were real.

ARE YOU SERIOUS???

What the hell? When did gaming become a sport or even worth watching/showing on TV?

Get off your backsides and go and play the game for real.

I agree it shouldn't be on Sky.
But maybe these players do also play the game for real?
Or are they all fat spotty layabouts?

Wasn't there a show called GamesMaster back in the 90's where geeks competed on console games live on tv?

I say put it on the red button.

If Sky dedicate a channel just to football then they have lots of hours to fill. Plus news just in, playing games on consoles is popular with the kidz. They could always show a repeat of a game from the 90s or some ex pros making bland comments along the lines of it was better in my day. But you know, life moves on. Suck it up and chill out.

If you're into the FIFA series it's actually really good to watch, especially from a learning to get better perspective, these guys are SO good. There's a dude called Vitality Rocky who's amazing to watch. The patience, the possession football, the clinicality of his finishing, it's really good to watch.

Don't have much time for the dude that won though, he's one of the most miserable *******s you'll ever see. Even in his celebration pic he looked annoyed to be there. I'm not a hardcore watcher of it, but enjoy it when I do watch, but then I'm a keen FIFA player so am bound to be interested.

If the fanbase is there (which it is, FIFA is huge), and it can attract sponsors, then yeah, get it on tele. These professional gamers are ridiculously talented and unbelievably good at the games they play and it's good to see they're getting the rewards for their talents. E-Sports will be as big as traditional forms of sport in 5 years without doubt.

I genuinely hope this isn't true.

I don't play games like i used to, but i know that to get as good as these guys are takes a lot of dedication, which i respect.

That WILL mean speding more time on their backside, now that doesn't mean all online gamers are fat slobs, but having aspirations to be an online gamer automatically impacts on the time kids can spend outside. Which will impact health in general.

Spot on - the fact they get called "sports" is poor - people sitting there playing on a console is not and never should be a sport
Sitting on their backside pressing buttons is not a sport and I worry for the future , calling them sportsmen gives them the perfect excuse to continue it instead of getting of their backsides into the fresh air and trying the actual sport

Lots of assumptions being made on this thread.
Do we know that they don't play sports for real?

Maybe they go to the gym everyday after work & then play PlayStation for a couple of hours when other people are sat watching tv, or sat debating on a golf forum.
Instead of discussing golf why aren't we all out playing it??

I think casual gamers, and the odd exception may well fit your description. But like anything, most people need a lot of dedication to become the best at something. That'll mean hours of playing which for the elite may fit around a good diet and exercise, as with success comes a better lifestyle. But for average joe at home, if they aspire to be the best at online gaming it'll mean more time indoors than outside.

I heard recently that AGAIN supermarkets and food chains are being told to restric the calories in food. Humans can, within reason consume whatever they wish if they do enough to urn it off. Imo, we should worry more about the calories we are able to burn off (exercise), than what we consume.

True, but there's also lots of people that sit on their backsides at work for 8hrs+ each day, then go home and sit on their backsides watching tv.

As soon as someone mentions game consoles people tend to start stereotyping.

I agree.

But they aren't held up as role models. That my only worry. Inspiring kids to potentially be less active.

Yeah good point.

Parents need to take responsibility for their kids getting more exercise tho.
At the minute my lad isn't overly bothered about gaming,we have the odd game on FIFA.
But if he ever decides he wants to spend all day on his Xbox it wouldn't even be up for discussion.
