As Golfers to live in the UK?

The parkland golf thread got me thinking.. as Golfers do we really appreciate what we have in this country Coursewise as opposed to the rest of the world.

Ok Ive never played beyond these shores so I can't compare but on the whole I think we're pretty fortunate with the choice/amount and variation of courses that we have, Links, Parkland, Heathland, Moorland Theres certainly a lot to go at.
Do you think you'd even be a golfer if you lived elsewhere and had to travel 50 miles to the nearest Goat track just to get a game.

Does it get any better than the UK??

No, I live in the North of Scotland and TBH, it wouldn't bother me if i didn't ever play outside the region. We have Top Championship Links and a few half decent Parkland/Heathland course within 50 miles of my house.

The winter can be a bit bleak, so a trip to somewhere warmer would be nice, but going to play abroad wouldn't be for the courses.

Scotland the home of golf.... I like it at home.

After Playing in your neck of the woods recently I'd Definately feel the same if I lived there.

I do like my trips away but it also wouldn't bother me if I rarely ventured outside of Lancashire.

slightly further afield but would love to be a golfer living in Ireland, cracking courses and VFM, just a shame everything else is expensive lol.

I do think we are slightly spoilt here though but typical Brits we like a good moan :D

We are incalculably lucky to be in a position to play golf. Easy to forget that when you're taking your third out of the clag.

Another vote for Ireland but have you seen the UK top 100??!! And the 100 that didn't make it??!! I can't imagine that variety and quality anywhere else within such a (relatively) small area.

:whoo:

Very lucky indeed for the large choice, quantity and variation of courses there

But with that comes the inevitable (& equally large) variation in quality, customer service, design.... and weather

i realised how lucky we are when I was paying 50euro (cheap rate) for some of the courses in Portugal. no history, in some cases very few trees, real manufactured feel.

give me that 100 year old oak, the little stream, rolling hills and lush fairways any day!

you are not paying for the courses over there, its the near guaranteed sunshine! it rained for my whole first round over there too!

I've not played in the USA, but I imagine they've got it pretty good in places. Florida springs to mind, with the choice and density (relative to area of course) of courses. Not so sure about other parts of the USA (like the great plains up north west of the USA) having the choice.

You don't hear of many golf courses in Alaska!!!

USA

Some of their public courses would put some big name private clubs to shame over here.

Hard to compare the two but you have vast choice and gauranteed weather somewhere in the States at all times.

I'd love to play golf in scotland in the summer - light until gone 10.30, but would have to emigrate during the darker winter!

not as bad a some think, but depends where you are. We rarely get snow in Inverness and Nairn. It gets dark at 3 pm for a month but once the shortest day is over, its much better. can play in the evening by April and its still light till 10pm even low we are well past the longest day.

Hard to argue if your talking about the likes of Bethpage and Pebble beach, isn't St Andrews also classed as a public course?

As I said I haven't played in the States but how does it compare VFM wise on the whole.

There is nowhere better than the UK and that the top and bottom of it. Such a variety and quality choice in such a small area is unreal. Scotland is like golf's red light district :D

USA is nowhere near. Some crackers out there but so many rent-a-kit courses. Not the same character as over here. Prices are a joke as well. $500 for Pebble beach before buggy rental as well. You can play 3 open rota courses for that!

Yes we are lucky especially in Scotland however in terms of a pure visitor experience the the yanks do it and do it very well, they look after you from arriving at the clubhouse to driving out the car park. I love playing golf in Florida especially BUT the courses can be very samey, big greens, lots of water, massive bunkers regardless of the layout.

I have played a few very good courses in Orlando area for as little as $35 (£25 approx) including a buggy and range balls. Some courses are extremely good value.

I do think the service is good in the states, they do that very well in most aspects compared to over here.

Mind you ive experienced some pretty good customer service in Scotland playing golf too. Its a bit just turn up there's the first tee and see you later down here though :D

Most are like that up here too
